Preventative skin care is the foundation for maintaining your youthful appearance. Sunscreen is essential and we recommend daily use of sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater. Please ask for recommendations if you do not already have a good sunscreen.

Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables will help your skin look its best. Your skin is an organ, and while we can do many things to improve the appearance of your skin, improving your overall health will lead to dramatic improvements in your skin. Currently, the scientific data on supplements such as antioxidants is mixed. Aging leads to increased free-radical release in our bodies and specifically in our skin. In addition, external factors such as excessive sun exposure and smoking lead to free-radical damage. Antioxidants can scavenge free-radicals and prevent them from causing damage to collagen. Common antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin E, beta-carotene, and flavonoids. There are also topical versions of these antioxidants that claim to promote wrinkle reduction. To date, there are no scientific studies that demonstrate wrinkle reduction with either ingested or topically applied antioxidants. Eating a diverse diet full of fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water, sleeping and exercise are the best ways to improve your skin and overall health. Taking supplements, especially antioxidants at the recommended daily allowance is safe, and likely sufficient. As far as skin benefits are concerned, flavonoids appear to be the most beneficial: proanthocyanins (found in grapes and pine bark) and polyphenols (found in green tea).
