The Handlift Procedure

Frequently the focus of cosmetic improvement is the face. Yet, one of the most age-telling body features is our hands.

Why do hands age so fast? The skin on the backs of the hands has very few oil glands so it wrinkles and chaps easily upon exposure, especially around the joints. Because it is so much thinner than skin on the face or neck, it not only succumbs to the aging impact of the environment, but it also is more susceptible to the aging process in general. As hands lose firmness and plumpness and the underlying structures appear, they look bony and fragile....with tendon, bone and vein protrusion. Not only that, the hands are constantly exposed to the environment, the sun and sun damaging photoaging, gravity, age, daily abuse and overall  neglect.

Combating the aging hand syndrome takes more than hand cream (though that simple step does make a difference). The latest technology has given us a set of procedures that will have similar effects as those we have been able to accomplish for the face.

“The Hand Lift” is a fast, super simple procedure that literally converts older-looking hands into younger looking hands in minutes. In my practice, I achieve complete hand rejuvenation by combining Radiesse with Artisan Skin Resurfacing.

Radiesse injections immediately re-plump and replenish volume to the back of the hands to provide a supple and youthful appearance instantly. Radiesse is a dermal filler made from Calcium Hydroxyapatite. Radiesse works by stimulating the body to grow more collagen, effectively rebuilding collagen structure lost by the aging process. Placed beneath the surface of the skin on the hands, it immediately adds volume, giving them a more youthful appearance by reducing the look of tendons, joints and veins. Radiesse provides instant and durable long lasting results.

Palomar’s Artisan Laser is used to diminish the appearance of brown spots and pigmentation. Palomar is one of the leading fractional laser and non-ablative laser manufacturers in the United States. The Artisan delivers energy to target and destroy pigmented lesions associated with sun damage and age spots.
Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response. These optimal wavelengths of light clear pigmented lesions by targeting the chromophores of melanin. These damaged lesions are then cleared by the body, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin. Pigmented lesions undergo a mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days and patients are left with more youthful appearing hands.
My patients are encouraged to protect and maintain their results with a medical grade skin care routine at home.  Using a skin care routine that includes retin A and an exfoliant will keep hangs looking soft, subtle and youthful. The hands also need to be protected from future sun damage (the main culprit in all unwanted pigmentation) by regular use of sun protection.
These simple, no downtime in office treatments are relatively painless and take years off of aging hands.  Combined with medical grade skin care, patients enjoy hands that do not tell the secret of their true age.
