PRP Treatment for Hair Loss

by

PRP Treatment for Hair Loss is
an exciting and promising non-surgical therapeutic option for patients
who require stimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions.

In a recent study cited in Dermatologic Surgery, physicians in
Korea published data supporting the clinical application of PRP in hair
restoration. Their research provides support for the clinical
application of autologous PRP and its secretory factors for promotion of
hair growth. (1)

PRP treatment for hair loss (as a Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Stoller
has been utilizing the benefits of PRP for over 20 years) is an
all-natural autologous medical procedure performed in our office for
scalp, skin, and hair stimulation.

While, we don’t expect everyone to understand the ‘science’
behind it, we would like you to know PRP specific cells that causes hair
growth include:

Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)—promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication, skin formation;

Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b)—promotes growth of matrix between cells, bone metabolism;

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)—promotes blood vessel formation.

Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)—promotes cell growth and differentiation, blood vessel formation, collagen formation;

Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2)—promotes growth of specialized cells and blood vessel formation; and,

Insulin Like Growth Factor – (IGF)—a regulator of normal physiology in nearly every type of cell in the body

Here is how we utilize PRP Treatment for hair loss:

During Surgery

At our center, Dr. Stoller knows the effects of treatment with
platelet plasma growth factors during male pattern baldness surgery.

There is significant improvement in hair density and stimulation of
growth when follicular units were pretreated with platelet plasma growth
factors before their implantation. Growth factors released from
platelets may act on stem cells in the bulge area of the follicles,
stimulating the development of new follicles and promoting
neovascularization.

After Surgery

The potential for using PRP to promote healing and hair growth after
hair transplantation is centered in three functional applications:

  1. To preserve and enhance hair follicle viability during and after hair transplantation.
  2. To promote and enhance tissue repair and healing after hair transplantation.
  3. To reinvigorate dormant hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth.

Maintenance

While one session of PRP therapy potentially has the ability to grow
hair, it is recommended that patients are vigilante with their desire to
grow hair. Many patients commit to 3-4 PRP sessions in one year and
have reported that they see an increase and thickness of their hair.

PRP Therapy and LaserCap

For many patients that has been the ultimate in hair growth. Here is
why: Both the LaserCap and PRP injections awaken dormant hair follicles.
We like to think of this as a double espresso. When used consistently
the LaserCap (every other day for 30 minutes) has proven to deliver
results.
