liposuction or abdominoplasty????

Liposuction or Abdominoplasty?

Have you’ve been wondering what’s the difference in liposuction and tummy tuck?
Many of my patients don’t understand the difference, but if we want to have that belly we dream of we must know what is the ideal procedure is for us.

Liposuction (Also known as liposculpture or lipoplasty) is a surgical procedure that revolutionized cosmetic surgery, becoming one of the most performed surgeries of the last decade. Basically consists in extracting the fat from the subcutaneous tissue in the area of
interest to the patient, we make a small incision in the skin, which will allow a cannula to be inserted which is used to extract the fat from the area. Apart from extracting the fat it improves the appearance and the overall shape (hence the name liposculpture). This
can be performed in almost all regions of the body such as the neck, chin, abdomen, back, buttocks, thighs, arms and ankles. As this procedure is very simple it’s usually performed in combination with another (i.e. breast implants), but it can be done by itself as well.

Abominoplasty is more like a recontructive surgery, is usually to performed when excess skin needs to be removedbut it there's a couple more benefits like strengthening abdominal muscles and the correction of other defects that might be present in the area, like umbilical or inguinal hernias. Also scars and stretch marks caused by pregnancy, aging or massive weight loss are removed.

Abdominoplasty can be performed with other procedures such as liposuction, breast reduction or augmentation, hysterectomy or hernia repair, for the last two we include other specialists specifically for each one such as gynecologists or general surgeons.

After any of these surgeries is important to use compression garments (bands) for a period of 3 to 6 months, also is recommended taking the medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

The recovery process is gradual and therefore you should wait a few months to get the final results, but the reality is that you will immediately see the diference.

None of these procedures is a method to lose weight but to mold and improve the overall shape of the body, if you have excess fat in those common areas (love handles, belly, etc) you are a candidate for liposuction but if there is enough fat that after liposuction an excess of skin will result you will be a candidate for abdominoplasty.

These procedures usually are combined for better results. I recommend doing both procedures together when applicable because the improvement in your figure is improved and any other defects you have will be corrected as well.
