Hair Transplant Results – How Long Until I See Them?

The process of hair transplantation is really quite simple. The hair on the back and sides of the head is genetically programed to grow and not fall out while the hair on the top of the head undergoes miniaturization (the progressive thinning of hair) and then hair loss. In hair transplantation we take the hair from the back and sides and implant it on the top. The hair that we move retains the genetic code that allows it to grow and never fall out. A very common question is how long after the hair transplant will I see the results? To understand the answer it is important to understand how hair grows. Hair on any part of the head can be in one of three phases. The three phases are Anagen (the growth phase), Catagen (the transitional phase) and Telogen (the resting phase). Usually about 85% of the hairs are in the growth phase and 10-15% in the resting phase. After the growth phase, the hair enters the transitional phase to allow the hair follicle to regenerate. This results in the hair falling out, which happens to 50-100 hairs each day. The hair then enters the resting phase for 1-4 months before returning to the growth phase. In hair loss, the hairs on the top of the head decrease in the growth phase and increase in the resting phase until there is no more growth and only resting.
When we transplant the hairs, a small hair shaft is taken along with the hair follicle. The follicle is implanted below the skin level. After a week or so the hair shaft will fall out and the follicle will remain in place. The follicle then enters the transitional phase to heal and regenerate. After that, the follicle that was transplanted then enters the resting phase. The follicle will stay in that phase for 3-4 months and then a new hair will start to grow at a rate of 1 inch per month. The hair that grows initially will be fine and thin. Then, over time, it will become thicker and fuller.
So to answer the original question, the results from hair transplant can take anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. The results, however, will be worth the wait. The hair that grows will be similar to the hair on the sides and back of the head and will not fall out over time. Hair transplantation is the only permanent treatment for hair loss.
