3 Beauty Gifts You Should Never Give Anyone for the Holidays

by

Everyone wants to look better and feel better about themselves, so giving the gift of beauty makes perfect sense... Right? While dropping a lip gloss in her favorite color into a stocking might get you some bonus points, there are some gifts that may be taken the wrong way. Trust me, I’m a cosmetic surgeon and I walk this fine line daily. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

1. Fat Girl Slim
First of all, this is the name of a real product. It’s even been called “beauty’s most wanted item.” It’s a skin firming cream that claims to energize the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

My advice: Unless this is part of an inside joke, don’t go there. It will be a gift-giving moment gone horribly wrong, even if the recipient has expressed a desire to slim down. A better gift: Stick with something that will make your giftee feel good, not inadequate.

2. Hair Removal
Industry innovations have made it possible to purchase at-home laser hair removal devices that promise to get rid of unwanted hair permanently from the privacy and convenience of your own home.

My advice: If you give hair removal, your giftee is going to get that message loud and clear, and it’s not a message you want to send. A better gift: See advice above.

3. Facelift Surgery
When it comes to turning back the hands of time, a facelift remains the gold standard in cosmetic treatments. But you shouldn't gift it.

My advice: Let’s get one thing straight. I’d love it if you purchased a facelift from my practice for a visibly aging friend or loved one. However, this is a slippery slope: (a) Recipient reaction (see gift 1 above) and (b) Until they meet with a qualified plastic surgeon, you don't even know if the giftee is a candidate for the surgery.

A better gift: A gift card to a cosmetic surgery practice. Let him or her decide what treatment or procedure to have done.
