12 Things You Should Know Before Having Plastic Surgery (Part 4 of 12)

Many doctors claim to be “board certified”, but in what specialty?  It is very difficult for consumers to navigate thru this tangled web of medicine.  Who’s qualified?
Let’s put it this way?  Would you want a plastic surgeon delivering your baby?  Or how about performing a knee replacement?  Absurd right?!?!  But that is the reality when you have a doctor trained in one specialty, ie, OB/GYN, family medicine, or emergency medicine and they just “decide” to do plastic surgery.  Weekend courses on how to a “cosmetic doctor” don’t qualify as “real” training. Only Board Certified Plastic Surgeons who are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialities are truly experts in the field of plastic surgery.  And yes, med spa procedures fall into plastic surgery.
4. Beware of Certifications – Many of those practicing cosmetic or plastic surgery do not have certifications in plastic surgery. If the doctor is NOT certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and/or a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons he/she hasn’t followed the traditional route of training.  They aren’t required to have additional training each year and are not held to higher and safer standards. Some cosmetic “certifications” are easily attainable by only paying a fee and are not certified by the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS)  Do your research!
