Genetics factors for Varicose Veins and Venous Reflux Disease
A role for specific genetic risk factors for varicose veins and spider veins is not known. However, heredity does play a role in the development or susceptibility for development of valvular failure at the saphenofemoral junction - also called venous reflux.
Of note, when an individual has venous reflux disease, the likelihood of his/her identical twin to have venous reflux disease exceeds 75%.
The likelihood of a male to have a relative with a varicose vein is approximately 20%. The likelihood for a female patient to have a relative with vericose veins is 45%.
