Do Zinc Supplements Help Wound Healing ?

by

The short answer is NO.

Zinc is a cofactor for the enzymatic activity of key enzymes involved in protein synthesis.

Patients who have zinc deficiency have problems with reduced epithelialization, reduced collagen synthesis and decreased wound strength (burst strength).

However, unless your have been hospitalized for a long time and have been on intravenous nutrition (hyperal), it is unlikely that you are zinc deficient. As such, most individuals are not zinc deficient and zinc supplementation will not improve wound healing in patients with normal zinc levels.
