Aging and Antioxidants
Antioxidant enzymes can promote mammalian longevity, according to an article in Science Express this week. It is well known that tissue damage caused by free radicals are linked to aging. What is not known, until now, is whether "antioxidant defenses can prolong life".
The current study investigated this in mice who have overexpression of an enzyme that removes damaging molecules that produce free radical damage. In these mice, oxidative damage and age-related decline in heart function were reduced and cataract formation was delayed and life-span increased by nearly 20%.
