Month - post op

Wow – so much changed after the first posting. I actually had my surgery on June 24th and which ended up being covered by my insurance. While the surgeon I used doesn’t handle insurance, his office staff went out of their way to make it happen with my insurance. We got the approval on the Friday before the Monday morning surgery – nothing like the last minute. While I still had to pay his surgeon fee and my deductible to the hospital – I still ended up saving some $$$.

My surgery was almost 6 hours long, was originally only supposed to be between 3 to 4 hours. The PS did a lot of work on my sides – which you can see by the photos, my side incisions are fairly long. He took off almost 4 pounds total, with 910cc from the left and 875 from the right.
My recovery has been fairly easy, which I am absolutely amazed by. The pain subsided quickly and I only used the pain meds for a day or two afterwards. I only had the drains in for a week, but spent 3 weeks on antibiotics due to prior infection issues. I seem to experience the most pain/tingling when I try to sleep at night. My right is considerably more tender under the breast, while my left is more tender above the nipple. Both of my nipples have feeling and are “functioning” properly. My left was a quick healer, with my right dragged behind. I am already able to sleep on my stomach with a pillow underneath me, which is awesome since I am stomach sleeper. My biggest issue is that I am allergic to the adhesive in the tape, so I have to take the tape off for a day or so and then replace. I have ordered the Newgels and am hoping that since they don’t have any adhesive just silicone I will have less issues. I haven’t been released to exercise just yet (going crazy), but see the PS again in 3 weeks and am hopeful that he will release me then.

My final advice is this – please try to manage your expectations and be realistic – while I am very happy with my surgery – happy the girls are smaller, perkier and where they belong on my body – I was hoping to be smaller and for a couple days that was all I focused on. I have gone from a size 36M to a 36E/G – which means I can fit into the cute pretty bras, but I will never be able to be part of the itty bitty committee. While the PS could have taken me smaller, that would have meant a FNG and both of us preferred not to go that route. The size I am now will allow for me to be the runner I want to be and I think I look fairly proporiate in my body – which was a big goal for the surgery. The bras that I have purchased all have small straps and I even got a strapless that was “normal” and not the corset type that I constantly had to pull up and adjust. So, while I was initially in a funk, over the last month I have realized that my girls look great and that I am over the moon with their fullness and that I fill out my shirts quite nicely. Try to focus only on the positive changes any BR will make, no matter the size you end up. It really is only a number (and a letter), that honestly most people couldn’t even guess if they wanted too.

This forum is such a great place for information and support, that I am not sure that I can add anything that hasn’t already been posted, but I will say this - best decision I have ever made and just wish I would have done sooner!!

First I would like to say how great this forum in...

First I would like to say how great this forum in – I just stumbled upon it and have been addicted ever since. Secondly, it is so interesting to read how PS in different countries and even other states handle the BR. I am always surprised by the ladies who post that they have to wait months, even years, for just a consultation and then even longer for the pre-op and surgery. Now I live in Scottsdale, AZ, which is probably right behind Los Angeles and Florida for the most PS in a square mile radius, so that can explain why PS procedures move quickly here – it is more when I want the procedure than when the doctor is available, which is great.

So, a little about me - I am 41, 5’8 and 180 pounds. I am currently a size 36M or 40L – depending on bra type. Over the last 2 ½ years I have lost over 170 pounds and my cup size didn’t change at all. So even with the last 10 to 15 pounds I would like to lose, my breasts will never be small, perky or allow me to go braless – so a BR is pretty much unavoidable. I had been over weight most of my life and honestly can’t even remember a time when my breasts were small, perky or anything that I wasn’t hiding to trying to ignore. I have wanted to do the BR for years, but until I lost the weight needed (or most of it) there really wasn’t a point or so I was told. The doctors I talked with all recommended losing the weight first and seeing if that would help. Losing the weight did help - it helped my health, my appearance and my self-esteem, but just not in the shrinking of my breast.

I am been very fortunate and not had the “typical” large breast issues. I never really had any back pain or any other physical ailments, until I become a runner over the last year or so. I can handle about 5 miles and then after that my shoulders will start to hurt, not to mention the marks my straps leave. I have decided to run a half marathon in January and realized that it wasn’t going to be possible if I didn’t do something about the girls, so the decision to have the BR was made. The pre-op is June 20th, with the surgery on July 11th.

Due to not having any history of physical issues from my breast and honestly no patience to deal with trying to get it covered by insurance, I have paid for the surgery out of pocket. Even if my insurance was to pay, the surgeon I am using doesn’t take insurance and there is no way I would go anywhere else. He offered to help me find a PS that would take insurance if I wanted, but I completely trust and respect this surgeon and that to me is more important than anything else.

With my huge weight loss, I had a lot, I mean a lot of skin around my abdomen and last summer had to have a tummy tuck done. He removed 15 pounds of skin. Unfortunately, 2 months post op, I ended up with a serious infection and had to have the incision reopened, I spent 6 days in the hospital and 3 months on a wound vac – allowing the incision to heal from the inside out. While many folks might think I am crazy to use him again – I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. The care that I was given by this doctor (not his nurses or his staff, but by him personally) was unbelievable. We talked daily, even on Thanksgiving and he would meet me on Saturdays so I wouldn’t have to miss any more work than absolutely necessary (and you can imagine how much that was). This is the kind of doctor I want in my corner if something goes wrong – it sucks that I had to go through what I did to find out how great of doctor his is, but he will forever be the one I choose for any other procedure I might think about doing. If anyone takes only one thing from my story, it is this – if you have any doubts about the PS you are using find another one.

Sorry for the length of this post – it is hard to get started, but then easy to just keep going. I did post to ask some questions – I notice that many of the ladies have posted about their pre-op appointments, but not much on what other medical they had to do prior to surgery. I am required to have a chest x-ray, mammogram, blood work, EKG and an OK from my primary doctor to have the procedure done. Just curious what others have had to do.

I am totally a stomach sleeper and am dreading the sleeping on my back. I had to do this for my TT surgery, but it was horrible and hoping for some suggestions to make this go around not so bad. Did anyone use any special kind of pillow or wedge to be more comfortable? If so, where did you get it?

At this point I am not sure what size I will be after the surgery – my only goal is to finally be proportionate. Anyone else out there started as an L or M, if so what size did you end of being?

Finally, how do you know if you need lypo on your sides? My PS has never mentioned it and I will ask at the pre-op, but honestly I can’t tell if I need it or not.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing their stories
