I have been overweight all my life. I was always the fat kid in a group. The jolly one if you will. I never let my weight get in the way of anything. My mom was supportive of every endeavor I wanted to do. My weight didn't control me, but I felt it was prohibiting extra stuff in my life. Recently my wife and I had our year wedding anniversary. The start a family talk has been overwhelming from both sides of the family. My main motivation for this surgery is make to make sure I am around to experience my kids lives. To better my life and make healthy choices for my family. Tomorrow, 4/10/13 I start my 2 week "liver" shrinking diet in preparation of my surgery. I am hoping that everything goes as best as possible. I am not nervous at all, my wife on the other hand is a nervous wreck.

Today is the day after surgery. My belly feels sore almost like I was doing sit-ups. Other than that though no pain. I'm already walking around and eating ice chips.

Day 2 after surgery, and I must say the worst pain I felt was when the doctor took out the drainage tube. It was kinda interesting to see that it was 8 to 10 inches in me. I also started the liquid diet consisting of clear liquids every 30 minutes for 1 week.

May 1st, 1 week after surgery feeling great. I went to work on Monday and I was exhausted by 12pm. The post op follow up was yesterday, the doctor was surprised I went work. Now I am on week 2 all liquids with 2oz max 4 to 5 times a day. I can drink water whenever I want provided I stop 30 minutes before.

Sorry for the delay.....

I am down 32 pounds since surgery. Tomorrow I my second follow up at the doctor's office. I have been able to keep down most foods I have tried. The only time I had to throw up was when I tried cabbage. It just didn't sit right. I have lots of energy and can't wait to go back to the gym in beginning of June. Right now I suffering with allergies so breathing is a bit of an issue. Not knowing what medications to take is awful. I will ask the doctor tomorrow what I can take.
Dr. Wai Yip Chau

So far so good. I have met with the Doctor for the consult and the preops talks. He seems confident and direct with his approach. I look forward to updating this after the surgery and subsequent visits.

Hi John,

How are you doing now it's been another week or so post-op? Are you recovering well?

Congratulations! I know how exciting it is to see the changes although it may be harder for you to notice them right away. Take lots of pictures! I use an iPhone photo app called PicStitch that allows me to put 2 pictures side by side for comparison. The feeling you get when you finally see the little changes and differences is indescribable. Good luck!

Hi there, welcome and thanks so much for sharing your journey with us!

Wow, not long until the big day! If you don't mind me asking, what is your current weight and do you have a goal weight yet, that you want to reach?

I'm at 353 now. I don't really have a goal weight in mind. I don't like to count my eggs before they are hatched. I prefer to follow the guideline and be healthy.

That's a great attitude to have. I'm sure your doctor will give you some guidelines of what they expect you to lose, but at the end of the day, this is about getting healthy for you and your family.

Please do keep us updated with your progress!
