5 weeks post op

It's been 5 weeks since my surgery and I'm just about ok with what I see in the mirror. My face wonky before and it wasn't part of the plan to fix that with this surgery so I can't complain too much but having said that I've just taken a picture for this update and noticed my right side is 'fatter' than the other - I'm hoping this is still swelling but at 5 weeks im not overly confident that it is?

My chin is still numb on one side. As are my gums and palette which feels very weird when brushing my teeth. The area under my nose is still tender and feels tight - I forgot to ask the surgeon yesterday at my check up what that was all about.

I can now take the elastics off to eat and that's made a big difference so to I'm just now becoming comfortable at chewing normal food.

I'm 38 and am almost 3 weeks post op. I've hated my profile since I became aware of my disfigurement at around 13. Braces in my early teens were a nightmare and in the end I made the orthodontist remove them.

Fast forward 25 years and I felt I needed to have my underbite corrected as I felt so unattractive. I needed wisdom teeth removing and longed for straight teeth and a nice profile. The orthodontist suggested the best way to achieve this would include jaw surgery. I was prepared for upper and lower jaw surgery and, as I always thought my underbite was due to my lower jaw protruding, lower jaw was the minimum that I expected. I had braces put on January 2014 to move my teeth so that after surgery they would be in a good position. I was surprised 3 days prior to surgery to be told that, after the surgeon and orthodontist had reviewed all the options and projected outcomes, that only my upper would be moved forward 5mm as this area was sunken rather that my lower jaw protruding too much. I was also to have my 2 lower wisdom teeth removed.

Surgery went well. My face was very swollen and I don't think I looked in the mirror for 2 days as I was terrified of what I would see. I was pleasantly surprised however as it wasn't as the bruising wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Drinking was very difficult as my jaw was practically bound shut with the elastics, my throat was very swollen and my palate, lips and chin numb.

3 weeks on and I'm not thrilled with the way I look. My profile looks bazaar to me and my bottom lip and chin are still numb. I'm hoping that I get the feeling in my lip back at least. I'm also hopeful that there is still some swelling around my nose and top lip area as at the moment I feel like I have a beak!
