In January 2013, I was diagnosed with stage zero DCIS breast cancer. I chose to have a lumpectomy to remove the site of the DCIS. I had follow up radiation after the surgery. Four months later another area of DCIS was found and it was recommended that I have a mastectomy. Due to the radiation, I could not have an implant after the mastectomy. My surgeon sent me to conference with Dr. Ariel Rad to see if I would qualify for the diep flap procedure for reconstruction. I have not felt the loss of my breast because the reconstruction was done immediately after the breast tissue was removed. I would recommend this procedure for patients needing breast reconstruction.

Hearing the news that you have stage zero breast cancer is a shock but when cancer cells are found again after a lumpectomy and radiation, you are stunned! It was in this stunned state of mind that my breast cancer surgeon referred me to Dr. Rad for a possible diep flap procedure for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. I had a list of 10-12 questions when I met with Dr. Rad but he did not rush through them but patiently answered each one. I was pleasantly surprised a few days later when he called me directly during his lunch hour to relay information to me. I asked to speak to a former patient that had gone through the diep flap procedure. Dr. Rad's office put me in touch with a former patient. She felt that Dr. Rad saved her quality of life with his miracle reconstruction after others had failed. I also appreciated that Dr. Rad encouraged me to contact him as questions arose before and after both reconstructive surgeries. Dr. Rad is a brilliant doctor using the latest techniques and methods. I always felt that he had my best interest in mind, as well as, being a caring and compassionate doctor!
