I had smart lipo done on Feb 5th, 2009 on my abs and hips and would not recommend it. I am naturally slender, but after kids had a bit of a pooch on my belly. As a 40th birthday gift to myself I, I went ahead and got laser lipo. I can honestly say, I look worse. I now have a wierd looking lump on fat that can not be hidden under clothing. I've been back to my doctor who says it will go away in 4-6 months. I don't think it's going to go away, but for the sake of being permanently disfigured am hoping she's right. Any one else have "lumpy" results???

This review is the subjective opinion of a RealSelf member and not of RealSelf, Inc.

Helpful review?

My Doctor:

results were terrible...not what she told me.

how could you have had laser lipo on february 5th, when today is only the 1st?

I do have some lumps and wrinkling - I would say it was still worth it overall. I had mine done on 7/17/2008.

it's been 4 months for me and I am lumpy, bumpy and look disfigured too. was told it's because I'm over 40 the healing is slower; they didn't say that when I had the procedure. I have a fat deposit in my female area and lines across my stomach and lumps around my belly button. I think Dr. Su's answer was great; too bad you are not in Houston!

we removed the referenced answer since it violates our user guidelines SueH- we removed a comment from a doctor that was written in 3rd person. It appeared to be posted by someone else within the doctor's practice and was self-promotional in nature. This is not acceptable

Hi ~ I had SmartLipo on October 17, 2008. I can totally relate to the lumpiness, but want to assure you that it will get better! I am 43, 5'3" & started out at 132lbs in a size 27 -28 jean. I am now in a 27 jean with NOTHING hanging over the waist, HOORAY - my belly is FLAT! I currently weigh 127 without any dieting after the procedure - but, I've been just as careful about what I eat as before. I think my progress has been PHENOMENAL! I only have a tiny lump today & I am confident it will be gone in no time! So, HANG IN THERE ~ I wasn't even able to feel all my skin until a month ago & was concerned about that...but, now everything FEELS normal! I think it's an AMAZING procedure & it has changed my life!

Wow...you give me hope! (Oh, I listed the date wrong - I had mine done in January not February). So, did you have pretty noticable lumpiness that actually went away? I still am sore, tight and have some numbness with a very noticable lump on one side and a smaller lump on the other. The lumps are very obvious to the touch as well as under t-shirts. I guess it's just hard to believe that they will actually go away. I hope your right! Did you massage them?

Hi - I cannot access your pictures and I wanted to see if I could notice your lumps around the belly button. I have the same thing and I am worried and dont understand how it would go away. Its only on the top of the belly button and it's very hard to the touch. I massage the area everyday but see no change. Also what kind of garment did you have. I am only 5'2" and the garment is too long for my torso. I actually have to fold some of it so I can have some additional compression. My abs & flanks were only done 9 days ago, am I asking for too much progress right now? I feel alot better today, much of the soreness has gone away. I am happy for that!

Hi ~ If you click on the "face" above my user name, I think it will take you to my old review & photos...I need to update the photos, but you will be able to see my lumps!! I had a BIG one above & below my belly button on opposite sides of each other. They were rock hard & no, I didn't massage them because it hurt too much to touch! I was really worried about how numb I was, but that totally went away, too!! Hang in there!

I am looking into this also live in Minnesota. Since there are only 2 Dr.'s who claim they do Smart Lipo I would like to know where you went for the procedure.
Victoria Falcone 18 Feb 2009
Hang in there. What you are experiencing is completely normal. All smartlipo patients have some level of post operative edema (swelling) which creates the hard and lumpy feeling and appearance. The best thing you can do is massage the areas at least 5 minutes twice daily to help with the healing process. There are other treatments that will speed your healing but they are costly. You will heal on your own over time just as your doctor told you. Massage, Massage, Massage. You just had surgery. You body will take time to heal, reattach your skin and remodel to your new appearance.

I just had lipo done on me, and I feel great but I am starting to feel those lumps you guys are talking about. I just have one question, what kind of lotion should I used to massage the areas? Is there any particular way to perform the massages?
sue-h 18 Feb 2009
I have been massaging like crazy but now I'm almost 2 months out and show no improvement.
Victoria Falcone 22 Feb 2009
Sue, I understand your frustration but what you are experiencing still may be totally and completely normal. If you want to try and speed the process why don't you go for lymphatic drainage or ultrasound treatments. YOu could look up a provider in your area. In the end, you will end up in the same place but if you are desperate to get faster resolutions, a series of lymphatic treatments may help.

Hi Sue, I've added your provider information to the review. Thanks! --Sharon

I have to say, honestly, I do not think my results are going to change...no matter how much massaging/lymphatic treatments. I know my body and need to accept the poor results. After 2 months my body has healed and is going to stay the way it is. I still have 2 very noticable lumps that are very obvious under clothes (I would say are much more obvious than having all over fat prior to this procedure). I think a lot of people say to wait it out and it'll get better, but my own common sense and the way I feel are telling me that my body has healed and is not going to get any better. It's just kind of sad that I paid all this money to end up looking worse!!!

Sue, I had regular lipo on 12/5/08 after a hysterectomy scar revision. I have a bunch of the lumpy tissue also. Lower ab and around belly button. I just got back from my PS this morning to ask him about it. It's been almost 3 months for me. He said that it will go away it just takes time. He said in by the end of two more months it should be gone. Keep on massaging the area.
sue-h 25 Feb 2009
I sure hope you are right. But, after reading lots of other comments on this I don't believe it's going away. How can scar tissue just disappear? It's just hard to believe. I'm still massaging every day and have had absolutely zero change.
Victoria Falcone 25 Feb 2009
You are calling it scar tissue but it is most likely what we call "post operative edema." I have seen some very impresssive edema with very large "hard spots" that go away to an absolutely beautiful result. It can take 6 to 8 month for some patients to get to their end result. It takes time for all patients. In the end, if there is retained fat, you can't get a touch up until at least 6 months post op. You have to wait because we all expect your swelling could last at least that long. There are a few people who will even take longer. In the meantime, just try to be positive and hope for the best. In the end, if you do need a touch up and have lost confidence in your provider, hopefully you can get some good advice on a referral from someone on this website.
sue-h 27 Feb 2009
It just seems funny that initially I was told by many that it would take 2-4 months to see my results and now that I'm at 2 months I'm hearing 6-8 months. Also, edema means swelling...I do not have swelling. I have lumpy hard tissue that does not change no matter how much massaging. It looks "ropey" in some areas. I guess to me it appears to be scar tissue. The area is not sore at all anymore, so I just find it hard to believe it will change at all, no matter how much time goes by...

The lumpy stuff will go away. Just be patient. Its new and your body must adjust. I wasn't warned about the lumps either and got scared but they did get better and my body looks great.

I had my lipo done 6 month ago and i still have lumpiness, amnd teh skin is still lose, :( DO I HAVE HIPE...please help...
CandyB 23 Mar 2009
I had lipo done in March of 2005. The same thing happened to me and my stomach is still bumpy and hideous. Exercise, lotions, massage have not helped one bit. I even lost weight and it made it worse. My doctor blamed it on the "way I heal". Not true, I have had other emergency operations where my skin healed beautifully. I can not emphasize enough not to get liposuction at all but if you must do your homework.

Hey i am 32y.o.female and had laser done 2 weeks ago on my belly and sides. My body has always been skinny but i have never been able to get rid of my belly. Its 2 weeks on and its painful still which is reasonable considering the work the surgeon did on it.It was a strange experience lying there with someone jabbing into your gut for 2and a half hours it didnt hurt much but felt really really weird and uncomfortable, the pain comes after!!! Its now like a dream and a quite violating one at that i'm just hoping i get the result i want as at the moment its lumpy and it looks plastic when i bend there are weird contours. I hope by everyone elses information it will all go down but then i guess its a game of russian roullette. Cross fingers, i wont be doing anything like this again in a hurry....

I had liposculpture one year ago .I still have lumpiness in my lower abdominal area. It can be seen through fitted clothing. When I complained to my surgeon , he said to give it a year.Nothing has changed. I was able to wear a 2 piece bathing suit before surgery. Now I'm not comfortable. Don't do it !!

I had lipo suction in Dec, 2008 and found myself 5 months later that I really don't see a difference. I find also that each side is different, I have scheduled an appointment to see the plastic surgeon who has done the lipo on me but what rights do I have when I am not happy after spending $10, 000 on what?
