After losing and aunt and grandmother to breast...

After losing and aunt and grandmother to breast cancer and finding my genetic susceptibility along with having the occasional lumps being removed I decided to stop stressing all the time and go ahead and have a double mastectomy followed by a bilateral free DIEP flap reconstruction. I was really only concerned with reducing my risk of cancer so I wasn't that worried about what my breasts would look like. I originally was going to have breast implants following the mastectomy but talking the plastic surgeon it became very clear that the best outcome for me long term was going to be to use my own skin for a more natural, maintenance free result. Talking to him also showed me that yes the risk reduction is the reason to have the surgery however the reconstruction result could affect my confidence for life and when the surgeon started asking gentle questions and I really started looking at my breasts and figuring out what I wanted I was really pleased that he was there to help me. The procedures went well. 11 hours of micro surgery for both removal of old breast tissue and insertion of new breast tissue. It was tough the 6 weeks or so in particular. I have a family and I am used to being very independent. You need a good support structure to help you during this time. Also suggest you get some nice soft maxi dresses and soft nighties. From there though it became easier week by week. 10 months on and I'm doing very well. Still numb in some places however these areas are getting smaller as my body repairs itself. I look down and really can't believe the beautiful job my surgeons did. In one piece bathers you wouldn't even know that I had surgery.

I cannot thank Damien and his team enough for their care and attention. After a double mastectomy I really didn't realise how important the reconstruction was until Damien led me through the process. My recommendation to anyone needing reconstruction work is not to rely too much on the internet. It is extremely important that you personally see your own specialist to find out exactly what will be best for you and listen to them carefully as they want to make sure you get a great outcome. I highly recommend you see Damien. What he did for me was truly amazing and I will be eternally grateful.
