I have strong core muscles, I do Pilates, I ride dressage and lift weights. I'm not aware of any problem in my abs. It seems that the muscle repair is the part of a TT that is hardest from which to recover. I would not want to have unnecessary "repair" if there is not truly a problem. How can I know? I've had gastric sleeve surgery and have lost 40 lbs so far, and plan to lose another 24, then I will want to get the loose skin and flab removed from my upper and lower abdomen. Please advise.
Answer: How do I know whether I need muscle repair along with Tummy Tuck? Thank you for the question and congratulations on your successful weight loss far. Specific advice can only provide be provided to you after a complete history, physical examination, and a full communication of your concerns and goals. Some general thoughts however may be helpful to you: as you know, the tummy tuck procedure typically involves plication of the abdominal wall muscle that have spread during pregnancy or weight gain/loss. IN MY OPINION, omitting this part of the procedure for the vast majority of patients who present for consultation will likely leave them with continued abdominal wall laxity and (again in my opinion) a less than optimal result. Best wishes.

Answer: Muscle repair Although the best way to determine whether you have muscle separation is by being examined by a doctor, you can do a test on your own as well. Simply place the tips of your fingers in the mid-line of your abdomen while you’re doing a crunch. If you can fit 2 or more fingers in the space between your left and right abdominal muscles, then you may have muscle separation and a tummy tuck can correct this. If your board certified plastic surgeon examines you and finds that you don’t have muscle separation, then you don’t need to get it corrected during your tummy tuck.

Answer: Rectus Plication Hello,If you were heavy enough for bariatric surgery, you likely had spreading of your rectus muscles which would require repair. If you have chosen an ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeon to do your surgery, he can tell you whether he feels it's likely, and would confirm once in operating room; he would not repair something that doesn't need it. Best of luck!

Answer: Tummy tuck Congratulations on your weight loss! As you know a tummy tuck will remove loose excess skin and it is likely that your muscles are lax and separated and will benefit from repair (plication). Only an exam by a plastic surgeon can tell you the answer, it is best that you schedule a formal consultation to determine the surgical plan.

Answer: Muscle tightening in tummy tucks Abdominal muscles are routinely tightened in standard tummy tucks. Occasionally a patient will be in such good shape that their muscles are in good position and strong. These patients do not need additional tightening. This is helpful because it reduces the pain during recovery and generally allows the patient to get back into full activity/exercise in half the time.
