Multiple filler options

Ronald Shelton, MD answers: Radiesse vs. Restylane for nasolabial folds

What is the difference between having Radiesse vs Restylane filler for nasolabial folds? Which is better? I've had it done with Juvederm but have read that the other two are longer lasting.

There is much controversy as to which filler lasts longer. Some say Juvederm lasts longer than Restylane and vice versa. I am currently testing this in a group of patients but we are only at the six month point. I will study this for a one year period. At this time, the Restylane and Juvederm last equally. Radiesse may last slightly longer. It is a good product but is more painful than the former unless it is mixed with anesthetic by the doctor immediately prior to use. This process is an off label indication though. If there is a bump formed by Restylane or Juvederm, it can be extracted readily or injected with hyaluronidase to dissolve it. This can not be done with Radiesse. Evolence is a collagen product approved by the FDA this year and may last slightly longer than Restylane and Juvederm but is not as forgiving as them. Restylane and Juvederm can be used in the lips, but Radiesse and Evolence should not be placed there. They are all fine for the smile folds as you are asking.

A: It depends on whether you have a fold or a line.

To Pippin,

For nasolabial LINES (that means very superficial, shallow folds), Restylane is best because it is very forgiving and can be injected superficially.

For deep folds, particuarly in men, I think Juvederm Ultra Plus is great because it is very soft and can last one year.

The technique (exactly how it is done) is really much more important than which filler you get, so pick an experienced plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

It's like choosing between Coke and Pepsi.  It really depends upon your preference.  Each one lasts different lengths of time. They are made from different things but both are absorbable.
