Perfect symmetry after rhinoplasty

Steven Wallach, MD answers: Can closed rhinoplasty fix my asymmetrical nostrils?

I don't really hate the shape of my nose; I just it want to be more symmetrical. But I'm a little skeptic as to whether a nose job can match shape of my nostrils when I have seen people with huge yet perfectly straight, symmetrical noses end up with smaller crooked ones.

I would greatly appreciate a prompt reply. I have already scheduled an appointment for next month but I'm having second thoughts. This is driving me crazy!

Thank you.

Perfect symmetry after rhinoplasty is impossible. Rhinoplasty can refine noses to make them look natural, to maintain or improve the airway, and to improve the size and shape of problem areas( i.e.nostril size).

A: Nostril Asymmetry is Correctable

Most often, failure in correcting deviated noses lies in failure to correct the nasal septum. New deviations that occur after Rhinoplasty also often involve failure to correct the nasal septum.

The nasal septum is a large structure, the base of which lies just behind the columella (the skin between the nostrils). Deviations to the lowest or caudal part of the septum can create nostril asymmetry.

This is usually corrected using a caudal septoplasty technique. This should be independent to other changes you are seeking to achieve in the nose.

Make sure your surgeon is well versed in septoplasty surgery and you should be OK.

Best of Luck
