Choose a surgeon that can deliver natural results

Sam Naficy, MD answers: How can I get natural-looking rhinoplasty results?

I want a rhinoplasty to get rid of the bump on the bridge of my nose but I don't want to look fake and obvious that I've had nose surgery.  How can I get natural-looking results from my rhinoplasty?

The nasal hump is the one of the most common reasons for men and women seeking rhinoplasty surgery. The hump (or bump) may be made of bone, cartilage, or a mixture of both. In addition to the hump there may be other imperfections in the profile, such as the angle between the nose and the upper lip which could also be corrected. In planning the procedure, your surgeon will decide on the ideal lines of the nasal profile. This planning phase of rhinoplasty requires not only an intimate knowledge of nasal anatomy and structural support, but also a strong artistic sense of facial balance and harmony. The ideal outcome in rhinoplasty is a natural-appearing nose with balance and harmony, enhancing the beauty of the eyes and lips.

This is an example of a natural rhinoplasty I performed for a patient who did not want a dramatic or obvious result from her rhinoplasty:

Dr. Rivkin is correct in stating that small humps may be corrected with non-surgical rhinoplasty but the majority of nasal humps are too large be corrected with injections.  If injections are used to treat medium or large humps the result will be an unnaturally large nose with a blunted nasofrontal angle (the junction of the forehead and nose).

A natural-looking nose has many distinct features that blend with facial features.  Many years ago the bridge was taken down too much as if it were a ski slope.  Noses were turned up too much, and excess cartilage was removed from the cartilaginous framework of the nose.  Today with modern rhinoplasty techniques, including cartilaginous structural grafting, a very natural nose can be obtained in most instances.  A natural nose still has a very strong profile without a hump, with good relationship to the middle third of the nose, and the tip needs to balance well with the remainder of the bridge.  For an excellent, good looking, natural nose, it is imperative to have a surgeon who is well-versed on noses through the experience of performing thousands of rhinoplasties.  The nose is a very key feature of the face and in order to blend well it must be without distracting appearances. The nose is unique in that it should look good in a three-dimensional fashion and permit functional breathing as well.

A: Knowledge of facial beauty is essential when looking for a surgeon

You definitely want to go to a surgeon with an extensive knowledge of facial beauty.  This knowledge allows a surgeon to formulate goals to achieve when doing this procedure. Your nose should be balanced in your face. The nasal tip is the center of attention and should be an equal distance from the level of your iris to the the level of your lower lip. The width of the nasal bridge should be about an iris width and the base of your nose at the level of your nostril should be around 3 iris widths. The width of your nose at the level of your eyes should gradually increase to the width of the base.

Knowing the goals is extremely important. After this you need to carry out these goals and you need all the skills in the surgeon to be able to achieve this. Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult surgeries for a plastic surgeon and you should definitely go to someone who specializes in this procedure.
