Fraxel Repair will out perform the Erbium YAG

William Groff, DO answers: Fraxel Repair vs Erbium Yag Laser: downtime and results

What is the difference between the Fraxel Repair and the Erbuim Yag Laser in terms of results (mainly for fine lines, texture, pores, and scars) and downtime?

Hi FairestOfAll

We have the Fraxel Repair and 2 different Erbium YAG lasers. For your concerns, the Fraxel repair will win this battle between the 2 lasers.

The Fraxel repair penetrates much deeper than the Erbium Laser, so this will yield much better results for scarring, lines, texture and pores. Because the Fraxel laser is a fractionated treatment, small, microscopic islands of "unlasered" skin will be left behind after your treatment. This islands speed the healing process and also minimize the risk of infection, pigment changes, and scarring. These side effects would be much more likely with an aggressive erbium treatment. Light erbium treatments can be good for brown spots and as a refresher for your skin, but will do little to address your concerns.

The social downtime with the Fraxel is approx 7-10 days. when used in a fairly aggressive manner, and 7-14 days with the Erbium. We also have a standard CO2 laser and Active FX and I can tell you the Fraxel repair is the workhorse in our practice. For the best results, see a board certified dermatologist/plastic surgeon that specializes in laser procedures and performs the treatment him/herself.

Take care,

Dr. Groff
