What's the REAL down-time for Fraxel?

Posted 25 Aug 2007

I'm thinking about getting Fraxel done for acne scars on my cheeks. My dermatologist recommended it, and it looks like as long as I take several precautions, the results should outweigh the pain/discomfort. However, I'm nervous about the downtime. I am a high school teacher, so it's impossible for me to just hide in a cubicle or take a week off to recover from the procedure. I'm also nervous about the redness, swelling, and peeling many people have reported. I don't want people asking me, "What happened?!?!" The best I could do during the school year is either a 3-day weekend or wait until Christmas break. Any advice?

does this treatment actually help the acne scarring or does it just appear to for a short period of time due to swelling. I have not had good results past the first two weeks. My scarring is not horrible to anyone but me but in asking friends and family, there's been no change. Although the micro mini peel applied in between has caused me more scarring

What fraxel did you get? Most people find the fraxel restore does little to nothing for acne scars. Some people respond well to the ablative fraxel repair re acne scarring. It is more expensive, and there is more downtime.

Hi Jamie, It is Fraxel Restore and I from all I'v been told and read, I should have some good results. At this point, the damage has been done to my face already with the micro peel so the Fraxel is hit or miss but from what I've read, it can't hurt. Thanks for your help and wish me luck:)

ok I had a total of 5 fraxel treatments over 5 months and recovery time was honestly at least 7 days, therefore I would have the treatment on a Friday afternoon and by monday I would return to work. Some people commented and others said nothing. I never said anything exept once I told them it was a wind burn from shoveling in the cold. I applied lots of cream to get rid of the dryness. My skin is continuously looking better and better.. I will do it again in the future as I am pleased with the results.

I have had two Fraxel treatments done. Both times I was swollen immediately and stayed that way the day after. By the second day the swelling was gone, but my skin was red like I had stayed out in the sun to long. My skin starts to peel around the fourth day, but nothing extreme. I have three treatments left and plan on taking no more than one day off from work for each treatment.

I am fair skinned and had my first fraxel treatment. Day 1,2 quite pink and day 3 pink and peeling, day 4 pink and peeling, day 5 less peeling and less pink. My skin looks refreshed, and like "a good skin day" (same as good hair day). I will be doing a total of 5 treatments at one a month, so I will let you know how it works out for each treatment... So far I am very pleased and see that with more treatments, continued improvement.. so far better than any creams I have used.. impressive :)

Great fraxel result! I had my procedure done 13 days ago and though it took me quite a while to shed the dry, bronzed skin, it looks terrific. REALLY, remarkable. FYI I use Chocolate Sun instant tanner (available online) for the face, and Im tan with the skin of a much younger person. Will certainly do another treatment in 8 wks because I still have some sun damage. Dont think the one treatment can erase years worth of damage. Its a 5 star treatment! Im hooked.

I have had 9 fraxel treatments for pigmentation that was caused by me taking StJohnsWort and subsequently caused photosensitivity which led to brown patches all over my face. I highly recommend fraxel for this the pigmentation has gone snd its left me looking 10 yrs younger, everyone has commented on how grear my skin is looking. Yes the latest technique creates more flaking but its the body's way of stimulating more collagen and shedding the old skin and pigment. The treatment is worth every cent I paid nearly $900 per treatment.

I had my first fraxel treatment on Tuesday, April 20th. It has been 5 days and I still can't wear makeup. I am extremely dry and peeling. I also have a few blisters! I think this is because I told the doctor that I had a high tolerance for pain and to crank it! The following has been my day-by-day experience: Day 1: Very red and swollen for about 5 hours after treatment. I used cold towels all evening to cool my skin and try to prevent as much swelling as possible. Day 2: Not a lot of swelling, still red. Lots of "pin" scabs where the laser penetrated my skin. Day 3: Same as day 2. Day 4: Broke out with some blisters. My skin is extremely dry and peeling. Day 5: Same as day 4. Still not comfortable going out in public! Thankfully I am self-employed.

How is your skin looking now? Are you glad you did it?

I just had my 2nd Fraxel treatment for acne scars. My down time has been about 5 days. The reason is because my scares are so deep the laser is set on a higher frequency. Everyones skin is so different it is hard to say what is right for one may not be right for someone else. I have had very little peeling but have very red skin for a few days. I can apply makeup after the 5 days and no one can see the redness. It does fade quickly. I am having my 3rd treatment in 4 weeks and am so looking forward to it. The little pain I have experienced is worth it! I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of having it done. It it so much better than having the dermabrasion and have the skin scraped off your face with a wire brush!

I would definitely wait until a 3 -day weekend to do this if i were you. i think each person reacts differently. I just got mine done Friday at 1pm ... it's sunday now and my face has just started peeling dramatically when i woke up. I've been putting moisturizer on it once every hour to minimize the peeling but it is very significant. I couldnt imagine trying to put make up on top of all this dead skin peeling off. I did take off work tomorrow just in case and i'm glad i did.....it looks like my skin will be ready to apply make on by tuesday morning. It is easiest to cover up the fraxel with makeup the first 2 days after treatment because the face hasnt started peeling yet. however, once the peeling starts...its pretty noticable. It's pretty important to coordinate these types of treatments around work schedules...just in case. At least do ure first on a 3 day, then see how u heal from that one. There are a bunch of three day weekends starting jan...that would be best.

My comment is I am three weeks out and red scared and would never do again. Not sure if scars will go away. Never do this.
Habari40 3 Apr 2013
Fraxel has minimal down time , 1 week no more...and then only due to the flaking, the results are certainly worth waiting for believe me. After 3 mths you will notice your skin rejuvenating and looking youthful, lines that were there are filled up. Give it time. Cant understand why you would have had so much redness unless they used a diff laser tip and your skin is extra sensitive, nevertheless the benefits outweigh the short term discomfort. I am due to have my annual fraxel (11th one) soon so will post my results on here soon. Good luck ,Danielle from Cape Town

laser tip left square boxes on face. Have pictures. Than each box got brown yuk. I have a scar on forehead. Still in shock. Putting vitamin e on it crisco cream. Lots of vitamins and juices. I cover with dermablend so I can run into play bridge. Husband can't look at me. Makes me sad.
Habari40 3 Apr 2013
Did you go to a qualified Dermatologist for this? Only Dr's can administer a fraxel session and anyone else who is not trained will mess up. You will get better just be patient ...you will see amazing results. Also the reason your skin might be redder than most is that they could have gone deeper into the dermal layer of your skin where pigmentation is made. this could have increased your redness.
marilyn horween 10 Apr 2013
Hi thanks. Now April 10. Still red. Brown color. See squares. Around lip and chin. Huge scar on forehead. Scary. Went back to dr. Asus usual. It will be ok.
Habari40 10 Apr 2013
Just hang in there, many women have gone down this road and have no regrets in having the treatment, one of them is me. Just remind ursrlf what ur skin looked like before treatment and 1-3 mths after treatment. No regrets.
