Can you advise your best choice of post-op surgical bras to buy?

By LadyTeri on 28 Mar 2012

Hey ladies,  I'm having BR & TT 41/8!  Do I need to buy surgical bras?  If so which worked the best for you ladies out there?

Well the concenus is that I have been doing too much!!! I have been walking my dogs, doing laundry, I cooked last night etc......amd I have been unable to sleep more than 6 hours a night, so she took all the tape off my breasts, which she said were bothering them, gave me more pain meds and ambien and I am on complete bedrest!! She said I am to do nothing!!! She said I have the "Typical post op syndrome" of thinking I can do everything while fogetting I had major surgery just last week......so I am going to be taking it easy.......

Oh I am glad that is all it is!!I hope you are able to sleep better with the meds. Make sure you don't take them until you get in bed though! It can make you do all sorts of things without remembering... It's the same drug everyone sleep drives and eats on!

When they say rest, they mean it! All of that lifting and moving will slow down the healing process and potentially cause you to heal mishapen! Rest!

I was told by my PS that you want a bra that covers your breasts and has an underwire and a lot of support because the breasts are changing constantly, and if you wear a sports bra, there is just not enough support...

How interesting! I can't get over how different the instructions from different doctors are. I have never heard of one saying you need to wear an underwire bra during recovery! It seems like they all say NO underwire for lengths of time that range from 6 weeks to one year.

That was my thought I'm in shock that anyone was told wire it sounds so uncomfortable but I know every doctor is different. I love my compression brea holds me in place and is so comfortable.
Mrs. Thomas 5 Apr 2012
Hey Janined how are you doing? Is the wire bra comfortable? It sounds so weird to me they asked for wire but as you said every doc is different I hope you are healing well :-)
Miss W 6 Apr 2012
My surgeon said the same thing - NO underwires for at least 2 months.

Hi! My doctor gave me the bra he wanted me in, and while it was comfortable for a bra it was making me insane by day 11. Even with my H cups I ripped my bra off the second I got home because the constant feeling of a band around my rib cage makes me nuts. Turns out this didn't change post op! Thankfully he cleared me to switch to a stretchy spandex bra, and I have been happy in one of those since :) SO, I would say don't buy a ton of bras before! You really don't know what will work for you until after!

Lady Teri....I think it depends on your dr......I have read so much on the forums that I thought I would be wearing
a surgical bra for a long time......but I went for my post op on Monday and she told me to get a bra which ends up being my old size, and it is to "shape" the girls now.......and they will be changing every few weeks and be prepared to buy new bras every few weeks....hope this helps....

Good advise. I returned all the expensive compression bras today. My PS said the same thing as well as other women here. So thanks!

HI Lady Teri, I just had a BR on march 27th and although I bought a few bras my favorite by far is the Annette Seamless Breast Surgery Bra (w/ SeaKelp) from makemeheal.com It is so comfortable and doesn't seem to bother my incisions at all I only bought 2 and wish I would have gotten more. Best of luck with your upcoming procedures :-)

Thanks!
