Nose Still Plugged10 Weeks Post Primary Rhinoplasty: Swelling or is Something Wrong?

Hello, 10 weeks post Rhinoplasty (Open surgery w/packing) and still having problems breathing through my nose. My nose sometimes whistles. My doctor said it is allergies but I have never had allergies and don't have any other symptoms. My nose still feels very tender so I am leaning towards swelling or perhaps my nose was injured during the surgery. Working out is very difficult and breathing through my mouth is unattractive. Should I see another doctor or give it more time to heal? Thank you.

A: nasal obstruction following rhinoplasty

Depending on how extensive your surgery was, obstruction 10 weeks following surgery may still be a possibility.  There is undoubtedly some persistent generalized swelling, which often contributes to nasal obstruction.  In the meantime, continued use of nasal saline spray, and possibly a nasal steroid may be in order.  An examination by your surgeon should reveal the cause of your congestion.

Is There a Way to "Thin" Wide Nostrils Without Doing Rhinoplasty?

I have very large nostrils and I would like to get rhinoplasty but is there maybe a "do-it-yourself" method to make the nostrils smaller or at least push them up so they are not wide but longer?

A: nostril size

Nostril size is a fixed anatomic feature, and change to the nostrils generally require surgical intervention.  This is often done in conjunction with rhinoplasty surgery, but if done alone, can be performed in the office setting under local anesthesia.  Incision placement depends on the specific nature of the nostril enlargement, but generally these incisions hide well in natural anatomic landmarks.

Squishy Skin on Nose 7 Months After Tipplasty, Is this Likely to Heal/Change?

I had a tipplasty about 7 1/2 months ago where my bulbous tip cartilage was reduced. Now, the skin on the front of my nose is squishy. When I touch it, it looks and feels exactly as if I was poking my cheek. Maybe its excess skin or fluid/tissue under the skin but I'm certain its not the cartilage structure underneath that is moving. Higher up on my nose where the skin rests on the bone is normal. Is this something that will heal/change with more time or is it just the result of the surgery?

A: soft tip skin following surgery

Loose skin in the area of the tip several months following surgery could mean that you have very soft cartilage in the tip of your nose or that you have some persistent swelling (edema), which in the tip, can take many months to resolve.  I would suggest visiting with your physician to determine if further observation, or possibly an injection may be in order.
