I want larger breasts but I'm afraid that the scars will be obvious when I wear a swimsuit. Where and how big would the scars be if I got breast implants?
There are several different incisions that can be made for placing breast implants. The good news is that none of them are easily visible in a swimsuit once they have healed and begin to fade. The two most common approaches for breast augmentation are with small incisions around the areola or in the crease underneath the breast. These are not typically more than a few centimeters (1 to 1 ½ inches) depending on the type and size of the implants. In fact, patients frequently talk about how much better they feel in a bathing suit after breast implants.
need to know more about the safety and whether doctors now recommend getting silicone breast implants
There has been much controversy about silicone breast implants over the years, and these devices have been studied extensively by medical experts. At one time in the late 1980s and early 1990s there was a question of whether silicone breast implants might increase the risk of women developing certain diseases and their use for breast augmentation was restricted. After much study it was demonstrated that silicone breast implants did not increase the risk of these diseases, and the restrictions on their use were removed. Furthermore continuous improvements in the breast implants themselves over the past 50 years have made them more durable, longer-lasting, and overall better devices than previous generations of implants.
what can i expect should i go with breast implants and then get pregnant? does the pregnancy cause the breast swelling to become abnormally painful? do stretch marks appear more often?
Pregnancy can affect the breast in many ways, regardless of whether the patient has had breast implants or not. A high percentage of my patients have breast implants placed prior to pregnancy and remain happy with their results after pregnancy. Nonetheless breast changes after pregnancy can result in breast enlargement, loss of breast volume, or sagging of the breasts. In some cases a mastopexy, or breast lift, is desired if there is significant sagging of the breasts after pregnancy. Having breast implants placed before pregnancy is also safe, and only in rare cases will this affect the ability to breast feed. This is something that you can discuss with your surgeon prior to surgery, as some surgical techniques carry lower risks.
