Microdermabrasion is an extremely popular medical spa treatment. What it does, is it combines some sort of exfoliation with vacuum. What this will accomplish is the exfoliation will help to remove the surface irregularities of you skin. It's going to remove the outer layers of dead skin, thereby allowing the fresh new skin cells to come to the surface. The vacuum helps to create blood flow to the area, help stimulate collagen and help stimulate the development of new healthy skin cells.

So, the whole idea of microdermabrasion has been around for a while, and it's one of the most popular procedures, and it's a really great thing to do for your skin. This is one of the original systems, and what it uses is vacuum, but uses these aluminum oxide crystals for the abrasion. What I've found is that the crystals can be slightly irritating. My patients weren't happy that the crystals were getting stuck in their hair. They'd pull some crystals out of the outside of their ear. Sometimes, they'd get crystals in their mouth, so it was a little bit uncomfortable for them.

The other concern is the fact that these crystals are aluminum based. There's been some talk about whether or not there is a link between aluminum and Alzheimer's, whether aluminum crystals are safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. So, what I do now, is I use this system. This is a crystal-free microdermabrasion system. I love it. I think it works great. It uses the same vacuum, but instead, if you look at the tip, the tip is embedded with diamonds, so it's using a diamond tip in order to provide the exfoliation. It doesn't use aluminum crystals for the exfoliation. So, this is less irritating, you don't have messy crystals stuck in your hair, there is no concern about possible link to Alzheimer's disease. There's no concern about doing this during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

This system has a large variety of different tips, so I can use this fine tip to work the corners around the nose or around the eyes, and I can use this larger tip if I want to do some microdermabrasion on the body. Don't forget your neck and decollatage. Those are areas that are often forgotten, but they can show your true age.

So this is a great, great system for microdermabrasion and eliminates some of the health and safety concerns that have been associated with some of the older, crystal-based systems.
