SkinMedica is a science-backed, luxury line of over-the-counter skin-care products cofounded by the late dermatologist Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick.

Focused primarily on skin rejuvenation, the brand was one of the first to foray into the realm of epidermal growth factors (EGF).

In addition to its signature TNS (tissue nutrient solution), it includes active ingredients such as Lytera, retinol, and a unique formulation of hyaluronic acid, to help improve the appearance of skin.

Pros

  • SkinMedica was cofounded by an esteemed dermatologist, so it's always been backed by both clinical research and real-world results.
  • It’s owned by pharma giant Allergan, and the brand has been able to capitalize on the giant's resources and infrastructure for ongoing clinical research and product development.
  • SkinMedica products are formulated to rejuvenate your skin from within, for long-lasting results.
  • They can optimize or extend the results of in-office cosmetic treatments, like laser resurfacing and chemical peels.
  • Their product line offers a broad range of options, including facial cleansers, a popular AHA/BHA cream, and eye creams, to address a wide range of concerns and all skin types.

Cons

  • Like other medical-grade skin care, SkinMedica products are more expensive than drugstore solutions.
  • Some people have complained about a medicinal smell, which may be due to a lack of added fragrance.

  • Average Cost:
  • $175

SkinMedica products can be expensive, but most RealSelf members who use them say the cost is Worth It.

The lowest-priced items are the sunscreen, cleanser, and toner, which retail for about $38 each.

Outside of bundles, the brand’s most expensive product is the TNS Essential Serum, at $281 a pop. Other SkinMedica products hover in the $100 range.

Like any skin care brand, SkinMedica has a handful of favorites and bestsellers.

  • SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex is the first product to contain their patented Tissue Nutrient Solution blend of antioxidants, proteins, and amino acids. This potent combination improves the appearance of fine lines while evening out skin tone and texture.
  • SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum offers many of the same benefits, in serum form. It can be used in conjunction with the Recovery Complex and boasts more clinical studies than any other skin-care product on the market. It now comes in a TNS Advanced+ Serum, with an additional growth factor to amplify results.
  • SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum contains phytic acid, to gradually lift excess pigment, brighten skin tone, and improve skin discoloration for a more even, radiant complexion.
  • SkinMedica Retinol Complex comes in three strength variations (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0), so you can level up as your skin grows more accustomed to this potent, highly recommended ingredient. (For instance, if you don't have sensitive skin and have adjusted well to Retinol Complex 0.5, you can switch to SkinMedica Retinol Complex 1.0, for optimal results). In addition to retinol, it also contains ceramides, niacinamide, antioxidants, and peptides to nourish, soothe, and protect skin. You may still need to pair it with a light moisturizer as your skin adjusts, but it's less irritating than many high-strength retinols.
  • SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator, a buttery hyaluronic acid lotion. It’s formulated to help the skin replenish its own hyaluronic acid—which becomes depleted as we age, leading to dry skin—while it hydrates. The result is both instant plumping and long-term improvement of fine lines and wrinkles.

Other popular products from the brand include their Vitamin C E Complex, Total Defense + Repair SPF, TNS Eye Repair, Rejuvenative Moisturizer, and Dermal Repair Cream.

Yes, SkinMedica products are medical grade skin care. This physician favorite is often sold at dermatology, plastic surgery, and med spa practices.

It’s also available for purchase online at authorized retailers, and many even allow you to earn Brilliant Distinctions points with every SkinMedica purchase. Find a local authorized retailer here.

Check this list of unauthorized retailers before purchasing. The brand cannot confirm the efficacy or authenticity of products sold through unauthorized retailers.

There are several science-based, over-the-counter skin care lines with a focus on skin rejuvenation. SkinMedica is most often compared to Obagi, another favorite of dermatologists and plastic surgeons.

Senté is another standout, as is SkinCeuticals.
