Painful Tire Under My Chin/Think Carefully About This Procedure if You Are Older! - Washington, DC

The procedure itself didn't hurt much at all. I had the "small" procedure at my doc's recommendation. She also will not do a second set of injections for 8 weeks, so my hope of looking better through the holidays and my upcoming 60th birthday are dashed. Anyone who tolerates botox/fillers won't be surprised.

But I was surprised by several things: 1. on the phone I was told most people do fine with one treatment. but when I got there the doc told me I might need four!. 2. the price is $1500/treatment so do the math and it might just be more cost effective to have a lower face lift. 2. the doc's nurse had the treatment and told me it had a tightening effect on the loose skin, but the doc said that wasn't the case and I might need laser or other procedures to tighten up loose skin. 3. the post treatment pain and swelling! I feel like I have an giant, painful tire under my chin and it has caused great embarrassment (thank goodness we've had some cold weather and I could wear a turtleneck to a couple meetings) and discomfort.

It's well over two weeks now and it still hurts, though the swelling is going down. At this juncture, I am completely disappointed in the procedure and in myself for not doing enough research in advance. Had I thought this through, and known how long the pain and swelling would last--and thought through the costs--I might have just had a lower facelift as that may be necessary to get rid of the sagging skin anyway.

I have really good skin for my age (almost 60)--but I don't think this procedure is a good solution for someone in my age bracket with slower collagen production, etc. I am slathering on the hylauronic acid and other moisturizing creams in hopes the skin will bounce back, but am not hopeful. Have photos and will post soon.

Keep us posted- I hope in the end you are happy and don't feel like you've wasted money and time.  Do you think you will continue with the additional Kybella treatments or stop and invest in a lower face lift instead?  Whatever you decide to do, let us know.

I honestly don't know at this point. But a total of $6K for Kybella, PLUS thermage or some sort of skin tightening laser means the total bill could be close to $8K-- or more. I need to get some quotes on lower face lifts!

It might be worth looking into.  I wonder how long you would have to wait for the Kybella to settle down before they would operate.  Probably just a couple months but who knows.

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time :-( it's sad that your dr was not more upfront with you. Mine told me it would hurt and I would swell significantly. He also explained why it was so expensive ($600 per vial!) and cautioned that even tho I'm skinny I might not see drastic result with just one treatment, but that I might. Who knows how someone will react really. But he did tell me to realistically expect at least two procedures and as such that is how he wrote up his quote. He did also warn me that it is NOT a skin tightening procedure however, laxity in skin is different in everyone. Younger people do seem to experience a somewhat "tightening effect" as the skin shrinks to fit around your new, smaller chin. But I have seen many older people (men and women) experience the same. It just depends on your skin. :-) stay positive and if you go for a second treatment keep us all posted!!!

I really appreciate all the kind comments and helpful feedback. I will let everyone know what my next steps will be--but for the short term I'll just be dealing with the DC snowstorm to end all snowstorms! So more time to think through my next dermatological steps:)

Sounds to me that they said what they had to say to get you in the office. Then the "real" talk starts! It's the "bait and switch" and I'm sorry they didn't do what they said. You do look to have very good skin! I think you should look to the lower face lift instead - IMO - I am an Esthetician, and that's what I would be advising. Good luck, honey, and happy holidays!

thanks for the feedback! I, too, am facing that reality. And honestly at least there would be pain for a few weeks or a month but then it would be OVER! I wouldn't, with Kybella, having to go back and then deal with the embarrassment of the bullfrog and the pain over and over again.

My doctor just told me yesterday (3 weeks after the procedure) that I could push on the hard swollen lump under my chin and it would help bring the swelling down.

Thanks for the tip!

I had the procedure done 1.5 weeks ago. I did plenty of research and everyone was very pleased with the END result. I am 58. Still having some swelling. As for neck creams, and deciollette creams, try Revivatone by Solvaderm, NeckCessity, or Necktifirm. I did find the Kybella hurt as it was injected, but gone by the time I checked out. $1,500 does seem on the pricier side. I was concerned with the whole aspect of the nerves, etc. So better to use someone you trust.

I went to a highly regarded derm doc. And one I had seen previously who knows my skin. I am using strivectin neck cream--went through nearly an entire jar. On top of that using other high-end products from Prevage and prescription Tretinoin Cream. Thanks for giving me hope that it works for someone in late 50's! Would love to see any before and after photos you have.

Flattened tire, but still there and so is the pain

it's been 20 days now. Certainly no improvement. Still have swelling. Pain. Keep moisturizing like crazy every night. Stri-vectin neck cream, hyalauronic acid, etc. I fear my I will just be relieved that the swelling from the procedure is gone but that I won't see any improvement--and will be seriously questioning the value of the 2-3 more procedures my doctor says I will need (plus thermage).

Oh man! Thanks for your review. Would you consider posting photos so we can see what you're describing? (Even of just your lower face)?

Ive got them, just need to upload. will do.

Hi hang in there! My second time was easier and that is where I saw a big difference. Less swelling and went down faster. You'll look great after the second one, well worth it.

thanks for encouragement!

I just had my 2nd set and dr. said I'd need no more sounds like you might want to consult with a different Dr. I wouldn't think you would still be in pain I hope it gets better also 1500 per treatment that's expensive I paid 650 total 1300 for mine. Goodluck.

Good to know I'm overpaying for painful and seemingly not helpful procedure:)

Hi. I had my jowls and neck done, but not at the same company as you. I was shown pictures of before and weeks following procedure. So I knew what to expect, but man did I look like a chipmunk. It was a painful month at least. Now, the thing I didn't realize is that I shouldn't have had it done on me. I was not a good candidate because of my skin's lack of elasticity. Now I have loose skin in my jowl area and a horrible looking neck. I'm now looking into a face lift with neck skin tightening. Hopefully, your skin is better at bouncing back. Good luck.

There's really no change after one treatment and I worry my skin won't bounce back so I'm thinking that I shouldn't good money after bad and should get a lower face and neck lift.

People have asked for photos. As embarrassing as they are to me, I want to share so you can evaluate whether you think this procedure will work for you--or if you want to look like this for a month.

I know what you mean! Posting pics is hard as his is such a personal thing. I hope you start seeing results soon! It's hard to think about going back for a second round when there are so little, if any, from the first. I am three days out from my second and saw very minimal results from the first. And it's so expensive to keep go back again and again and again....let us know what you decide! And I'll certainly update on my second round once it's healed...if I don't see much result from that one either I'll warn you for sure!
January 22, 2016
Thanks as I am considering a second round soon--while I can still wear turtlenecks
January 22, 2016
The same thing with me. 3 weeks after, and still a bull frog throat.
January 22, 2016
Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone!

Kathy , No I do not see where this worked, how heartbreaking for your pocketbook and heart.
