I went to a medspa in Waltham, MA to get filler injections. My primary goal was to soften the look of my nasolabial folds, so that they would not look so pronounced. I had just moved to the state, and had no clue where to go, so I just decided to do the easiest thing and head to the nearest medspa. The injector was not a doctor, but a nurse, who claimed to have 15 years experience injecting. She threw around a lot of fancy medical terminology, spoke with extreme confidence, and had a pretty pleasant personality, so I figured, why not. She seemed competent enough. I told her my goal was to soften my nasolabial creases, and nothing else. Apparently she had something else in mind. When she was done, I ended up with puffed up areas on both sides of my face, that looked like swelling. After two weeks the swelling did not subside. To make matters worse, there were large indentations where the nasolabial creases were. I literally looked like I had dents in my face. Instead of decreasing the look of the creases, they were now exaggerated and worse looking than before. My husband, who is usually oblivious to these things, even asked me if I lost weight, because my face looked a bit sunken in. Not exactly the look I was trying to achieve! My cheeks also looked puffed up, like a chipmunk. I did not take the best pics, but hopefully the ones I have posted here illustrate what is obviously a worsening of the creases.
I called her up and explained to her what had happened. She told me some people experience swelling for a month, so I patiently waited for this "swelling" to go away. It didn't. I went back to her, and she decided to add more filler. I ended up looking even worse. I knew that what I had experienced was not normal, at all. I had fillers done for the same purpose in the past, and had always been pleased with the results. The results were subtle, but that was all I was asking for. I have always been realistic in my goals. I am not one of those people who expects to look 10 years younger.
Instead of sulking about it, I got the courage to call her up and tell her that this is not acceptable, and that I wanted the filler dissolved and to get my money back. Thankfully, she obliged. However, she persisted in making me feel like this was all in my head, and that there was no problem. She tried to convince me with before and after photos that she took that there was improvement, but of course, if you are taking pics with an expensive Iphone in a very bright unnatural light and with flash, indentations and swelling are going to get blurred out. All in all, this was a horrible experience. I wanted to share this with you all so that you don't be stupid like me and ignore your research. Go with someone who has positive reviews that are documented on the internet. This is your face, and you deserve to be happy with the results, especially after spending a small fortune on it.
I am not going to name this person because I suppose she could have easily refused to give me my money back and made things even more difficult for me, so I am choosing to take the high road, as it were, and leave things as they stand. My purpose in this post is simply to prevent this from happening to others. Please folks, just be wary of people out there who claim they are experts, without any positive recommendations. And also be wary if they look overdone. That was the first thing I noticed about her. My instinct told me when I saw her face that this may not be a good decision, because clearly we both have different ideas of what is aesthetically pleasing. You just need to trust your gut, and not ignore common sense when it comes to these things. This is just my opinion, and am in no way angry or vindictive. As I said before, this could have gone much worse and she could have refused to refund my money and work with me. My goal is just to educate. Please make an informed decision about injections, because they can go very awry, as in my experience.

I had this done for the first time last year and had similar results. I just wanted a little filler to soften the nasolabial folds too and unfortunately was way overfilled. My cheeks puffed out but almost looked saggy and the folds looked worse and it looked like I had wrinkles were the filler protruded in the folds and caused dents. My husband also commented that he thought I was losing weight and it was making me look to gaunt and people at work asked me if I was feeling okay. This was definitely not the look I was going for. Went back to the nurse that did the injection and she kept insisting it would take some time for the swelling to go down so I waited one month and it still looked awful so I went back to have it removed and she kept insisting it would get better so here I am 14 monts later and it still does not look great. It has softened a bit but not where I want it. The aesthetician I go to did lymphatic drainage to help and actually talked me out of having the filler removed since she has seen other clients with skin issues after they had it removed so I am trying to be patient but very disappointed. I thought I did my due diligence and found a good place to go with a double board certified plastic surgeon and the nurse is supposed to be one of the best in the country but unfortunately it did not work out well for me. Not sure if I will do this again but understand it's the chance I took. I am glad you had a good outcome after everything you went through. Thank you for alerting everyone to be careful who you choose to touch their face.

Thanks so much for sharing. I am so sorry for what you had to go through, and can completely relate to your frustrations. I don't know what filler you had but I'm positive that with each passing day it will look better. As we both know it's of utmost importance to find the right person to do this, and hopefully if done again you will find someone who is on the same page with you and is an expert at their craft. If you ever do it again, may I suggest using this website to find the right person? The before and after pics speak volumes about a practitioner. If you decide not to do this again, I've found that makeup can also do a good job at hiding nasolabial lines, do a certain degree. Google "Makeup Facelift", or "covering nasolabial lines with makeup". I've been experimenting with concealer and surprisingly it's made a difference. The key is not to put the concealer on the fold itself, but rather in the shadow area. Works wonders and is a nice temporary fix.

I had the Juvederm Ultra Plus which I was told can last 12-18 months. I am hoping by the end of the year most of it will be gone. The nurse said maybe if I am "lucky" it will last 2 years as she has seen with some clients. Of course if I had liked the results 2 years would have been great. I had checked out reviews of the doctor and nurse including this site and most were very positive so I felt fairly comfortable with my decision. I guess I was pretty surprised that she actually thought what she did looked good. My face was not horrible but it certainly did not look great and did not enhance anything and the only comments about my face from family, friends or co-workers were negative so I don't think this was all in my head. I should have gone with my instinct to insist she only put in half a syringe in each fold instead on one in each. Last thing I said before she injected was to please be conservative since it was my first time. She held up the mirrror thinking I was going to say how nice it looked and I just gasped! I knew immediately I was overfilled and hated it. I have been using concealer and it does help. But in certain light it still looks terrible and I can still feel it in my face. I just need a little more patience and hope it will be gone soon. I will be interested to see how you make out when you have your next filler procedure since I am also in MA. Good luck!

I am sure this is not in your head, especially if others have noticed. The reactions of others can tell so much. Wow, this nurse you went to is sounding a lot like mine! She also used Juvederm Ultra Plus, made my cheeks look puffed up, gave me dents, and thought I looked fantastic. She also told me that swelling might last for a month, and to be patient. She works at 7 locations in the state. Hmmmm. The similarities are uncanny! On a different note, I wonder if non doctors are the culprit here? Nurses do not receive training specific to injections during their schooling, and generally don't do this for a living. Maybe I'm generalizing here, but my experience makes me see why this website stresses that people go to doctors to perform injections. Have you tried gentle massage, with one thumb on the inside on your mouth, and index finger on the outside, to get at the lumpy areas from all angles? I'm sure you tried everything at this point, but I figure I'd pose the thought to you. I saw that method on the web and it is supposed to help advance the deterioration of the material, albeit very slowly.
Yes, I will definitely tell you how my procedure goes. The doctor I'm choosing not only has rave reviews, but he appears to have received the highest reviews on this site for the area of Boston I'm near (110 reviews). He's has an office in Wellesley, and Tufts. His name is Dr. Kapadia. Best of luck to you as well :)

I too am in the Waltham/Boston area, and am looking for a doctor to do fillers for under my eyes. Would you mind sharing which doctor you chose? Thanks!

yep this is my current situation. I felt very depressed today after facing the exact same problem-I have lines on my face now that make me look older than 28. I went back to my medspa person and her before and after photo was much different than mine. So, I showed her my photo I took that morning pointing out the exact same lines I was talking about. She told me "oh those are just shadows....." No. They are not. When I put my hand over my face I feel lines. Ugh. Please tell me you found someone who did it right the next time? I dont know where to go in my area-my person was also a nurse with 12 years of experience..right.
Wow, thanks floribelle for sharing your experience. I'm glad you got the issue resolved - did the dissolver work? Do you plan to fillers again?
