I couldn't fathom the idea of traditional...

I couldn't fathom the idea of traditional metal braces at my age (47). I have always had problems with crowding on the bottom, flossing has always been less than pleasant and food routinely gets stuck. My dentist has asked on occasion if I considered braces. I first learned about Invisalign when my older children were in traditional braces and frequently see the dentist advertising Invisalign. When my youngest child was referred to an orthodontist by our dentist, I was somewhat surprised by how "cheap" his treatment was going to cost. So, I felt brave enough to ask if I was a candidate for Invisalign and if so, how much treatment would cost. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could do Invisalign (estimated 18 months of treatment), and even happier when I found out how much it would cost.

I had x-rays, impressions and photos taken the same day my son did his, so we decided to do this together. I waited about 6 weeks for the appointment to get my first set of aligners. A couple of things I wish I had been more aware of prior to the appointment to get the aligners; 1) I was surprised to find out that I was going to have 12 attachments (7 top; 5 bottom), as I had pretty much accepted the fact that I would need a couple, but no more. I'm not really too concerned because the end result is much more important to me; and 2) I wish I had done more research and requested my ortho review my Clinchek with me. I have since asked for him to review it which he said he would at my next appointment.

As far as my treatment thus far (tray 2/25 top and bottom), I have been mildly surprised with the relative ease in the transition. I have had very little discomfort, only minor sensitivity front top and bottom and some initial issues with the attachments rubbing against the inside of my mouth. Other than that, it has just been a matter of wearing the aligners pretty much non-stop (except for meals of course), and I would say I have been able to average at least 22 hours a day.

I brush/floss after each meal, and I have been cleaning my aligners with Efferdent in the mornings while I brush. I brush the aligners with water and toothpaste in the afternoon and evening. I also rinse with Act in the morning and mouthwash in the evening. I keep a kit at my office, and honestly don't have any inhibitions about brushing while at the office. I have noticed no smell whatsoever in either set so far.

I have found the many reviews I have read to be insightful and encouraging and thought I would share my own experience. I am looking forward to my new smile!
