Severe Chapped Lips - Reaction to Juvadem - Getting Product Removed – Very Unhappy. United Kingdom, GB

UPDATED FROM Oktavia22

Juvaderm Removed :-(

I had my Juvaderm removed on Wednesday, my practitioner was lovely and talked me through it - had the numbing cream on (which really burned my chapped lips initially) and then couldn't feel anything - hurt so much more having the injections to remove!
I had posted another question in the Q&A the night before it was removed, just trying to find any links with the Juvaderm and chapped lips. Had a great response from a Dr who advised that the injection can bring on the cold sore virus (something I was told about previously but wasn't sure if this was my issue) - she said it doesn't always present as an actual coldsore, but can present as swollen and severely chapped lips which I was/I am experiencing. She suggested anti viral medication for 6 weeks. I'd previously tried anti viral but only for 1 week, I did notice a small difference at the time.
Had the product removed on Wednesday and so far, my lips are worse off. I'm so upset that I didn't know to try the antiviral for longer prior to having it removed. I'm going to purchase some Acicilvor (?) online if I cant get in at my gp's in the next week. Will do another update then for anyone that has had similar or has similar in the future :-)

Thanks for posting and the info. I didn't know that JD could bring on the cold sore virus. I got JD for the first time about 3 weeks ago and my lips became very chapped immediately although not as bad as yours and I didn't have any blisters. I bought some lip balm to heal severely chapped lips called Carmex (www.mycarmex.com) and my lips were better in a few days. From your photos it does look like you had a herpes outbreak; what a shame the dr didn't tell you to take the antiviral for a few weeks. Sorry you had a bad experience with JD.

Hi, I’d always wanted fuller lips but was scared...

Hi, I’d always wanted fuller lips but was scared of looking obvious - I had 0.5 syringe 3 mths ago and was ooo happy with results! Although 2 wk after I started to get chapped lips - mild at first. I used various balms, oils, ointments - nothing helped. I went back to the practitioner and I saw my dr. I had small white dots under the skin on top and small dots where the product was injected on the bottom (minimal on bottom) As my lips got worse (painful, couldn't eat properly, hurt to talk) my doctor tried antiviral cream, Then I had antiviral tablets, and then steroid cream which did nothing. After the antiviral tables helped a little it has started to get worse again - I've noticed that since its gotten worse, the white dots have disappeared I have dried red skin above my lip line on top, and on the bottom lip, the skin is bright red and flakes off just in the three spots that the product was added. Allergan have advised the practitioner to 'manage' the chapped lip or remove the product. I tried but can no longer take it, whilst I loved the initial shape of my lips, this just isn't worth it. I'm unhappy every day and sore. The past couple of weeks when they've been bad, they've also swollen - I've never had anything like this in my life, both me and my doctor agree it must be the Juvaderm - so sad as I wanted to keep on having it. Anyway, has anyone had this/heard of this? Has anyone removed Juvaderm or had it removed? I very scared that I will be left with problems. Thanks so much for reading. p.s I've added some pictures - its hard to see in pics, my current state is the bottom one with the dark skin above lip.. you can see here (but not clearly) how red it is in a patch on the bottom too. - Oh and I also tried antihistamine for 2 days

Thank you for sharing your experience. Have you posted your questions to our Ask a Doctor board to get their perspective?

This happened to me the very first time I got juvederm injected but the reaction was from the numbing creams and cleaning solution they used before injecting. It was horrendous. Lasted for at least 2 weeks. I was clearly allergic to it or something. I've had many injections since but only use ice to numb. Just keep putting coconut oil on it!
Unless your injector diluted the juvederm with some unknown substance, there's no way you could be having a reaction to the actual filler. That's why you don't have to do an allergy test beforehand, because hyaluronic acid is already produced naturally in our bodies. I had a reaction the first two times I had juvederm injections and it was from the antibiotic ointment that the injector applied after the procedure. It was bacitracin. I had contact dermatitis and it was swollen, red, itchy and just gross. After a steroid shot, it cleared up and I have since had injections without incident. She actually stopped using bacitracin post injections because I wasn't the only one of her patients to have a bad reaction to it.
Hi oktavia did you get better since then?
Hi everyone, thanks for your comments - still the same unfortunately. Having the product removed tomorrow, really don't want to at all but cant see any other way at this stage. Just so sore, really getting me down. Totally understand about the substance being in your body naturally but still think reactions can occur - maybe my lips don't like anything being in them? Its just odd that the peeling and chapping is only where the product was added on bottom lip (on all of top lip but that's where most product was) I've been reading lots of info and have realised the white spots in my lips were Fordyce spots... they were mainly in my top lip but also faintly on the bottom where the product was injected, not sure if its correlated, but they've disappeared as my lips have gotten worse, might post another question to doctors...
