Umbilical hernia repair. Belly Button Looks Totally Different

Belly Button Looks Totally Different

akozlosky
I had a large innie. After surgery the base of my belly button is the size of a pinhead. Previously the base was 3/8 inch round. Belly button is nowhere near as deep and most of the innie is visible on my stomach. Is there anything that could have been done to avoid this outcome?

You should relabel this with "umbilical hernia repair - belly button looks totally different"

I wish I had found this before my own surgery. I regret it so much.

When they do the surgery, I find out they basically destroy you basically button and give you a new one as part of the hernia, so if you have a natural innie with the hernia, what you're left with is shallow.

How is your discomfort, back pain, breathing, etc.?

No pain but a whole lot of regret or wishing I would have went to a doctor who did it laparoscopically. Talked to my doctor over the phone and he said he didn’t cut my belly button from my body but when I read his report when I visited my primary care the report stated that he removed the umbilicus from the underlying tissue. I have no feeling nor do I get that squeamish feeling when I press in on it

Why did he remove the umbilicus?

I'm guessing it was open because that supposed to be less incisions but yes, they pull the skin up and flip it to repair the hernia

When they flip the skin do they severe the tendons and nerves. I know the tendons are supposed to connect to the liver and I believe the bladder

Did he explain why he removed so much tissue? Was the hernia large?

I feel your pain - I don't understand why surgeons don't communicate this to patients

Said it was less than 2 cm.

yeah I get that - but they are not supposed to excise tissue unless there is bowel in there
I'm guessing that's why he did it but it's still f*cked up
Also your umbilicus is sutured to your abdominal wall

He said there was only a small amount of fat the size of a larger peanut protruding with no intestinal tissue. I am wondering what happened to the tendons of my umbilicus because I have no sensation or feeling when I press in on my belly button.

It was open. He never explained that he was going to do that. If he would I would have got another opinion. He just told me a small incision under my bellybutton then close the hernia and boom done.

That's what my surgeon told me, to the later. One inch incision, one stitch.

WHY? WHY DO THEY DO THAT?

I'm so upset - it's horrible and so much more invasive than that
