I am scheduled to have an open rhinoplasty done...

I am scheduled to have an open rhinoplasty done seventeen days from now during my high-school spring intersession. I have never been teased or bullied but instead have decided to have the procedure done since I am self-conscious and feel it isn't proportional to my facial features. I have read a number of blogs and watched several YouTube videos on experiences which have helped me gain an overall idea of what I should expect and how to prep. Although this will be my first time under anesthesia, which is worrying to some, (especially my mother) I am confident the operation will go well since I am comfortable with my surgeon and the communication over my expectations. I have considered this practice since a very young age but never mentioned it to a family member / friend until 04/2012 then eventually my mother scheduled a consultation Jan/2013 where a date was set. I purchased items I found necessary for the "after," including:

CLOTH TAPE, LITER WATER BOTTLE, STRAWS, SALINE SPRAY, VASELINE, CLEANSING WIPES, GAUZE PADS, STOOL SOFTENER, CUTIPS, SLIPPERS, EAR PLUGS, TYLENOL, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, SUNBLOCK.

You have a very good list so far! I found that reading reviews gave me more ideas of things to get for my own procedure; in the latter half of my review (since mine is kind of long), I list all the things I had bought. If you ever wanna check it out, maybe it'll give you some ideas! Do you have a date in mind yet for the procedure? Good luck!

Yay, that is so exciting!!! You're gonna do great! My pain meds never made me loopy or Anything, and my pain was at a minimum the whole recovery (the worst was the beginning of Day 1, and even then that was a 2 out of 10, at BEST). It's a piece of cake! :)

I agree, I am 5 days post op. Zero pain. I was expecting a lot worse. Pleasantly surprised!

It's a good prep list! I would add a U-shaped neck pillow and I think you'll need more q-tips! I easily went through a package of 750 ;).

I still use my u pillow 2 weeks later. It is great for keeping the swelling down other morning.

Going under as sooooo easy!! Add neosporin to your list as your doc will probably want you to include it in your cleaning regimen. I took a lot of Airborne to keep my immune up. Arnica pills and gel. Juice, saltines, bananas. Make sure you write down when you took your meds. I said there's no way I would forget and I did. My iPod was really helpful. My doc says saline spray is a no no, it is too rough for the tissue. He makes me snort it from my hand. And of course get your meds ahead of time. Good luck, it's a lot easier than you'd think. I had zero pain, just totally out of it when I got home and for the night.

You will feel so good about your decision after! You should be very proud of yourself that you are brave enough to do the surgery! It takes a lot of courage and that should say something. Good that your doing it young girl. I am 5 days post op. I am 40 years old and mother of 2. I wished i did it before i got married! Or before I had children. Now i have years and years worth of pictures with my old nose! Yuk. Comments on your supplies list: Good job! Being prepared and knowing what to expect .. makes your recovery easy. Because there is no surprises right? I myself bought a whole lotta stuff. Didnt use half of it. Because I didnt bleed! Very very little discharge. NO pain, no packing or stents. I researched on taking all these vitamins before and after. Be careful, one site will tell you to take Vitamin E before and the hospital tells you not to. If you dont already take these vitamins, dont start now. I took none. And I look great. and I am a lot older! the one thing i focused on was am amazing diet. I eat like a champ. Even if I am not hungry. Your body needs to heal and can not do it on salty soups and crakers. I doubled up on protein (protein shakes, Greek yogurt - high protein, my famous "straccciatella" soup. Thats Italian. Chicken broth, mini meatballs and eggs beaten with some parmesan cheese. Throw the eggs in the soup and stir. That what the name rag soup comes from. High protein as well with the eggs and meat. Get that yucky fiber pellats and throw it in the yogurt. Buy fish, shrimps scallops. High protein. The day after surgery you will be eating light. The anestesia makes you groggy and out of it for a couple of days. Soups, jello, ice cream. Lots of straws it is hard to eat. If someone wants to help you, have them prepare all these foods and put in fridge for you. A couple of days after surgery you will be eating so if its already in your fridge, you will be likely to eat well!! I bought veggie fruit drink which has a lot of sugar in it so..I dont know is it all that good for you?? Hmmm, Make a chart next to your bed and write down when you take medicine. Put an alarm clock on or have your helper remember when to give you next dose! Button down tips, you dont want to risk your top hooking onto your nose when you take it off. So, Most importantly FIBER FIBER FIBER, you will def get constipated. I was concentrating on the other diet stuff like protein and veggies. I forgot about the fiber. Its a job to remember to get all this food in your system when your not even hungry!! Good luck and you will do just fine! Remember eat well.

Thank you so much for your advice! Reading all of the comments is really a big cheer up. I'll "attempt" to make your soup and buy scallops! Again, thank you!!

Being only ten days away from surgery has me...

Being only ten days away from surgery has me browsing the web for tips and advice instead of doing research for an English 1302 extensive essay - but this is a significant change and entirely worth a bland paper! As an extension to the shopping list - here is the second part, thanks to comments and other blogs. If you'd like to add something to the list, please comment.

SALTINE CRACKERS, SOUPS, YOGURT, PROTEIN SHAKES, U-SHAPED PILLOW, NEOSPORIN, AIRBORNE, ARNICA, JUICE.

I've been trying to avoid posting since it can be both repetitive and a bit useless since I haven't undergone the procedure - but I have a few questions I have been wanting to ask RealSelf users!

Did you have a rhinoplasty between the ages 16-18? If not, what age and why did you find it appropriate then? How was the experience? What change(s) did this procedure bring into your life? (especially among family and friends.) Pain scale: 1-5? When did bruising and most of the swelling go away? How long did you sleep with your head tilted under a wedge pillow? What do you recommend?

I'm 21 and just had mine done little less than 2 weeks ago. I'm glad I did mine early in my life but I'm also glad I waited until now because I don't think I personally would've thought to do all the necessary research if I was younger. Also, I think I never thought it was an actual possibility for me until about about 6 months ago, so.. Lol For me, the overall experience was very positive; it helped having the right surgeon and a good group of supporters, both on here and in my personal life. It obviously had its downsides here and there (day 2 was the roughest for me), but I found recovery to be much easier than I expected. The worst my pain ever got was right after the surgery when I had to wait around for a half hour before I could finally leave the surgery center - and even then, it was nothing more than an annoying burning feeling. That was merely maybe a 3 out of 10 on the pain scale. Other than that, it never went about a 1.5, maybe 2 at most and that's really reaching (out of 10). Since having the cast removed, it has changed my life in the sense that I feel prettier, more feminine, and more confident. My fiancé and my parents have already noticed the positive difference as well - and I was always a pretty confident person to begin with so I guess it says something that they noticed a change. I never got severe bruising in the way that it can turn black, blue or purple; mine was slightly blue-ish on the first day and then changed to a tan colour. By day 3, it was already turning yellow. My bruising was completely gone by day 6. My swelling started right away, by day 2, it was the worst, by day 3 it started getting better (less in my eyes and moved gradually down into my cheeks). All the swelling in everywhere BUT my nose was gone by about day 6 as well. Of course, my nose still has swelling but I'm only 2 weeks out so that's to be expected. I tried using a u-pillow for the first two nights but it was just too uncomfortable so by night 3 onward, I just slept in bed with two pillows. As long as your head is above your heart, it doesn't matter how you do it. When I saw my surgeon at 7 days post-op, he said I could sleep flat again, but I'm still sleeping with two pillows for a tad bit longer, just to be safe. You sound like you're very well prepared and did all the right research which is awesome! You'll do great! P.S. I totally know what you mean about pushing off essays to instead research more into the procedure; I did that too :P

I appreciate your response, it really is a nice support system! I feel I have a bulky nose that should belong to a man, but hopefully the procedure goes well! Now I'm nervous... I'll be staying at my "clinic" (I'm not sure of the term) overnight!

Hey! I had it done at 17. I think it is an appropriate age to have the surgery as you're young and healthy! The experience was great actually. I thought it would be much worse than what it was! The anticipation is definitley the worst part of the whole experience!!! It wasn't painful at all, just a bit of pressure on the nose on the 2nd day but that's it. The worst week was definitely the first week as the drugs make me feel crap and I was sick because of them -_- Pain was about 2! My bruising went away within 2-3 weeks. Nobody has noticed my nose which is the best thing about it! My parents are the only ones who know about it. I did not tell any friends and they have not noticed! Or they don't want to say anything!?! haha. I feel exactly the same as I did before I had it done! However, I feel a little less self councious and I don't care if people stare at me from the side anymore, which is a great feeling! And the sleeping part.... I slept with a wedge pillow for the 1st week and then a neck pillow for about 2-3 weeks after. After that I slept as I normally do. I highly recommend a wedge pillow and neck pillow for the first few weeks for a comfortable sleep!! :D
