Skin necrosis 8 days post-op - revision required for dog ear and scar tissue

ORIGINAL POST

Worst Decision of my Life

Beautiful845302
When I first had my consultation with Dr. Markarian, I was so hopeful. I am an avid gym go who was having difficulty losing my stomach fat. I knew there was a slim chance of me finding a surgeon but Dr. Markarian said he would be able to help me with an abdominal plasty and liposuction. It took months to schedule and I was so hopeful that he would be able to help me which he said he could do as he “wanted to help everyone.”
Eight days postop I noticed skin necrisis (skin death) forming, which Dr. Mercarian said it was Eschar and would just fall off. Working in healthcare myself, I didn’t think that to be true but I had to defer to his experience and expertise. After constant concern he agreed to debread the area. I was prescribed Silvadene to apply I believe three times a day. At one point it was discussed that a skin graft maybe necessary and it would be a full thickness skin graft. On Thursday July 24 I had an appointment in the office which more debridement was done. The 25th my mother called him because I really wasn’t feeling well and was told I couldn’t be that bad because I had just been seen in the office. The 26 I spoke to his office again and said I really wasn’t feeling well with body aches and chills and I told him I think I need to go to the emergency room and was told no because he didn’t “want other doctors to scare me.” I went to do the second Silvadene treatment and I was oosing gray infected fat tissue which had a horrible smell and I had bodyaches and fever all of which was reported to him in the two phone calls. I listened to my instincts and I went to the emergency room wound cultures were done. I had three infections and was transported by paramedics into Boston with IV anabiotic‘s running. During my emergency room visit I was seen by Brighman women’s plastic surgery and further debridement was done which you can see below. I was in contact with Dr. Markarian‘s office and he stated he would still be willing to treat me, however that trust in him as a physician was completely gone as he had initially ignored my concern with not only the necrosis but my concerns of infection. I understand that there are risks with this procedure however if Dr. Markarian felt that I would not have a good outcome he should’ve have advised me a such and in all honesty refuse to do the procedure. I ended up requiring a wound vac for several weeks. The decision was then made to do a partial thickness skin graft, and when I mentioned to my new provider Dr Markarian wanted to do a full thickness skin graft I was told if I had had it done and in the infection not cleared up I had a very high risk of going septic. In the photos from January 14 you can see the severity of the “dog ear“ which I was told was a possibility but was never explained how deforming it would be and how it would cause a crease and pain in my lower back constantly which will require a revision. I am also now going to have to have a revision related to the amount of scar tissue which has built up. I feel all of this could’ve been avoided if Dr. Markarian had listen to me as his patient when I told him something felt wrong initially with the skin necrosis and initially when I told him on the 24th That something felt horribly wrong. I understand that many have had successful procedures with him however this is not the case for me and people need to be aware of the situation and the severity of it. I’ve only seen good reviews on here so someone needs to be honest and show the bad side of it as well

So sorry this happened to you. Also I can not believe your surgeon did not follow up with your concerns. Everyone should stay clear of him

Hi hun, I went through necrosis too and it was about the same size. My surgeon was great in his aftercare though and had me on antibiotics from the start and debrided my wound right away. I packed it at home and it closed on its own at 2 months post op. I recently had a full scar revision and you couldn't even tell I ever had a wound. There is hope hun. I wish you all the best. I have a lot more pics of it on my Instagram @tummytuck1
