Life-changing Decision!!

After a childhood, teen years, and twenties of living in an obese, tired body, I finally started losing weight in spring 2016. It took me more than a year and a half to lose 60 pounds, but I did... going from a VERY tight 14/16, to a comfy 8 (and sometimes 6).

The weight loss left a lot of loose, hanging skin on my stomach that would become irritated during workouts and was just generally uncomfortable - especially rubbing against a c-section scar from our first born in 2014. Following the birth of our second child in April 2019, I found it nearly impossible to lose the 15 pounds I had gained, despite working out and healthy eating habits I had established years prior.

My abs were so separated and weak, I could barely do a sit up, and was left feeling constantly discouraged by my inability to change much about my midsection. In May 2020, based on a recommendation, I did a consultation with Dr. Sherbert about my diastasis recti, (suspected) hernia, and loose skin - and I never looked back.

Dr. Sherbert goes above and beyond to put his patients at ease. His experience is evident by the results of my surgery - I truly feel he is a miracle worker and has changed my quality of life for the better. He and his staff make sure you have all the knowledge you need ahead of surgery for the best possible outcome.

They prepare you for what to expect, give you prescriptions ahead of time so everything is set when you return home, and also have an after-hours number to call just in case (although thankfully I never needed it). My surgery included a one night stay at the hospital, and Dr. Sherbert visited before I checked out to see how I was doing and to recap the surgery.

My tummy tuck included the removal of 8 pounds of loose skin, and another few pounds of stubborn fat reserves via liposuction on stomach and flanks. I went in thinking I had maybe 2-3 pounds of excess skin, so hearing the real number was both shocking and validating.

I had two drains - one was removed around the 10 day mark, and the other around the 2 week mark because the insertion site was becoming irritated and painful. Dr. Sherbert had no problem squeezing me into his busy office schedule to get the bothersome drain removed.

The first few days at home were a bit of a blur, but if you keep up on pain medication, they are manageable! I do not like the feeling of narcotics, so I stuck with strong prescription Tylenol for the most part. My husband was so kind and made sure I took something every four hours as recommended, even in the middle of the night. I did my best to get up and walk around every hour or so as directed, although it was admittedly a bit painful and I was stiff/bent.

Most of my time was spent in a recliner, sleeping the first few days, then binge-watching Outlander :). I wore a binder 23 hours a day for the first month or so then Spanx or similar the next month. While I know the Spanx helps with swelling and shaping, life is much better once you're able to leave them behind :).

I did have one hiccup with my scar that started around the six week mark and took some time to resolve, but Dr. Sherbert was very mindful and informative about the issue, how to address it, and had me come in for more routine checkups to make sure we were on track. Now, the problem has fully resolved.

My advice:

- Do your homework on your surgeon and choose one with a good track record!! Dr. Sherbert's resume speaks for itself. He is also still always learning, and uses a newer liposuction technology for better results.

- Take pain medication as directed, and make sure you're eating.

- Have loose-fitting clothes that won't squeeze anywhere.

- If you have young children and have someone willing to help, see if they would be willing to take your children for the first few days after your surgery. I believe this was a game-changer for my recovery as my children were away with my in-laws for five days after my surgery.

- Take it slow and don't rush it. Listen to your body. There will be days where you swell - A LOT. I had days where I was easily two sizes bigger by the end of the day from swelling, and the swelling can be painful. The more you are on your feet those first few months, the worse it can be. But on the flip side of that, don't let that deter you from moving based on your doctor's recommendations.

- When you start working out again, with your doctor's blessing, listen to your body. I had moments of pain and swelling from working out, and tried to carefully wade through it. It does get better!! Sit ups were not as instantly easy for me as some people said, but I believe the extensiveness of my tummy tuck contributed to that - and now that I'm further down the recovery road, they are indeed easier!

- Enjoy and DOCUMENT the progress! Take pics often and do side-by-side comparisons for yourself to help you remember how far you've come and that the days of swelling or pain are worth it!

As I write this, I am 3.5 months post-op and it was truly the best thing I've ever done for myself. Since the surgery, I have not one struggled to get dressed or felt uncomfortable in my own skin. I am now back to being an 8 (sometimes 10), and hope to lose around 5-7 pounds on my own. My workouts are more fruitful and effective, and my core is all together more stable.

If you are in the Metro Detroit area and looking for a surgeon, I cannot recommend Dr. Sherbert at West Maple Plastic Surgery enough. He truly performed a miracle on my body; the results are FAR above and beyond what I expected.

Ladies: You do NOT have to justify this decision to anyone! If you believe it will make a big difference in your life, then start looking into this process and deciding if it's right for you.
