Smoke and Mirrors
Everything from the moment I woke up has been completely wrong. I'm 1 month post op and still feel it was my biggest mistake to go to Dr. Repta.
I was quote and paid for a tummy tuck with fleur-de-lis. Starting right after surgery, I could see a fleur-de-lis was not done, but more then that I could feel my stomach muscles and knew nothing was done there. When asking Dr. Repta the next morning he's open that I didn't get the fleur-de-lis (because there was not enough extra skin) but assured me I did get a Tummy Tuck. I had to ask directly about muscles to which he said it wasn't needed and said it like it was positive news. I very much so believe if I would not have asked directly he wouldn't have told me. Let me believe more was done then was.
To this I was ok, you can only do what u can do. If something can't be done or doesn't need to be done it makes sense not to do it. However I was quoted for a procedure that I did not get. When I asked for some reimbursement (not even a third of a bill that was more then $28k) I was told that I was quoted for a certain amount of hours and that I got those hours. Plus 45mins that they aren't charging me extra for. No where on the quote does it mention time, only procedure. Which I did not get.
Beyond money. less then 2 days post op my belly button stitches pop and they had to redo it with none desolvable stitches that I was responsible to take out myself later. 9 days post op I had tissue without enough blood supply that had died. They cut a large chunk out in my pelvic area. That then needed packing dressing every 4 hrs. I had to do to myself. Needed to heal from the inside out.
I flew home roughly 2 weeks post op. With a hole in my pelvic area, and a drain still in (which I was also directed to remove myself when fluid level dropped enough) continued care with emailed pictures and phone calls.
A week later I express concern over discharge and ask for antibiotics to which I'm told they aren't needed. Every day after that phone call it got worse. I even reached out before my next appointment and was ignored til my appointment. At which point he told me I needed to go to emergency room and have more dead stuff cleaned out. But that it will probably heal even if I don't, just will take longer. I luckily had already contacted my PCP and had appointment with her less then an hr after talking to Dr. Repta. Ot was so infected she was concerned that oral antibiotics wouldn't be effective. Funny considering Dr. Repta refused to give me any. She had a surgeon come in and consult. I am now on strong antibiotics and receiving wound care. And did need more tissue clean up. The tissue looked fine when I asked for antibiotics from Dr. Repta... I have to wonder if he gave me antibiotics when I asked if it would have gotten this bad.. Though I will still be doing alot myself it is a completely different method then recommended by Dr. Repta. Also while consulting with my local surgeon he inquired about the drain and instructions i was given for care and removal and said that is possible malpractice stuff. Needless to say my care providers here are not impressed with the care I received and I didn't even tell them how much I paid for it.
The surgery was more then $28k. Plus I traveled, for just the "right" doctor. Flights, accommodations for 2 ppl (ask I could come alone) rental car, food.... I'm guessing this trip cost roughly $35k. And even though I did not get the procedure agreed upon they would not refund me anything. And now I'm having to seek even more care and prolonged issues and even when it does heal I will have a nasty scare right above my whoha... not only did I pay a crazy amount for the surgery/ choosing Dr. Repta. But now I'm going to aquire even more expense getting the help I need to correct it.
I know stuff happens and perhaps the healing complication may not be his fault. But if he didn't know how to care for it he should have referred me to someone who did. And the fact that he ignored my direct request for antibiotics and that less then a week later I'm so infected the doctors can see and feel it in all the surrounding tissue. I was ignored and neglected.
Nothing I regret more. I regret the money, I regret the choice in doctor, I regret not getting what was agreed to, I regret trusting Dr. Repta so long and not following my instinct and getting help sooner. I know those plus size result pictures makes him such an attractive option. They are a lie too. I look nothing like the before and after he took and posted of me. He must be good at angles because i looked good in that picture.
There are other doctors that take plus size patients. Most are even more affordable. Please don't fall for the smoke and mirrors here. I did and I can not be more disappointed. I would look into a lawyer, but I know he can afford better ones. All I would do it drag it out, spend more money, just to lose.
On some positive notes, Lisa the nurse who took care of me after surgery when I spent the night was amazing. Kind, attentive, helpful and right on top of everything. I truly enjoyed her. And all the office staff, including his PA was so kind and friendly.
