I am almost a year into my Invisalign treatment. I...
I am almost a year into my Invisalign treatment. I have had severely overcrowded teeth but wasn't able to get braces as a child. My teeth have always bothered me so I finally decided not that I'm grown(I'm 25) and can afford it myself that I would get braces. I know I didn't want to deal with the whole metal mouth thing so Invisalign was the perfect fit. I spent a long time trying to find an orthodontist I was comfortable with but I finally did and he said I would be a great candidate for Invisalign. I'll just give a breakdown of my experience so far.
Attachments - I was told up front that I would have to have 8 attachments put on my teeth to help them move. Thet were a little hard to get use to at first, it kind of felt like sandpaper was rubbing against my mouth when I tried to eat. My mouth was a little sore for a couple days but I got use to them and I forget they are even there now. Some people have said that the attachments are noticeable but I have been out to eat and even asked but no one has noticed. I think it's just more obvious to you than it is to other people.
Speech - My speech was slightly affected for about the first week of having my Invisalign retainers in. It wasn't horrible, just a slight lisp. I did have a few people call me out on it at work but they just assumed I had dental work done. I think some impact on speech at first is to be expected, after all you are having to get use to this foreign object in your mouth. Once I got use to it, my speech was back to normal.
Pain (or lack thereof) - I read many reviews before deciding to get Invisalign and I saw a lot of posts about how painful it is. Fortunately, I have not had that experience. Don't get me wrong, there is a certain level of discomfort but definitely not pain. The best way I can describe it is it feels like someone is bear hugging your teeth the first day of a new set of retainers. Generally after the first day any discomfort is gone for me.
The biggest thing that I had to get use to with Invisalign is having to take them out for meals, brush your teeth, and put them back in. I will admit, this is very inconvenient at first but over time it just becomes habit and your forget about it. I now just keep a toothbrush at my desk at work and head to the bathroom after lunch to brush and put the Invisalign back in. But here is an added benefit to Invisalign - you will probably loose weight! I call it the Invisalign diet lol. When you have to start taking them out and brushing after you eat anything, it really gets you thinking about what you're eating and if you really need that. I use to snack a lot but when I got the Invisalign I found myself saying "that's not worth taking my braces out for". I will admit it is still a pain for me when going on trips or vacation. You are on the road and snacking while driving which makes it difficult to brush but I have found these things called Colgate Wisps which are like mini, no need for water, portable toothbrushes which are perfect.
I'll try not to be too long winded...I will just say for anyone considering it, I've found Invisalign to be well worth it. The only thing I would say is that it takes discipline. You have to wear them for the recommended period of times a day or it's not going to work.
