Fat Transfer to Cheeks Literally Ruined my Life

ORIGINAL POST

I will begin with why I decided to get fat...

$5,000
I will begin with why I decided to get fat transfer in the first place. I had laser damage on my cheeks from a V-beam laser. It left dents. Looking back, I would give anything to go back to just dents as my biggest problem. Dr. Edward Eades over corrected me leaving me suffering consequences that would later arise. We did a touch up fat graft as well 3 months later before any problems arose. The first problem to show was dark circles around my eyes that were never there before. This was vascular congestion. My orbital veins were not getting enough blood flow, and it was causing my inner eyes to be very red. Soon to follow, my right eyebrow started to droop and swell. My sinuses were being smothered causing them to swell and causing swelling around my entire orbital area. So, my right eye was starting to shrink! The skin around it was drooping and some days my eye would be nearly impossible to open. My left eye was ok, but it had developed a very dark ring around it. In addition to that, my nose started shrinking. No kidding! The fat was moving around and pinching my nose practically shut. I couldn't breathe! I started getting anxiety attacks because the fat was making it hard for me to breathe. I had to pay $10,000.00 to have a highly skilled doctor remove the fat. It was an exhausting experience. I had to be opened up on each side of my face and put under general anesthesia for 7 hours. While the doctor did a pretty good job given the situation he had to try to correct, sadly some of these problems still remain, and I don't think we got it all. I may have to go through this again. Also, now I am incredibly A-symmetrical because of everything. I'm depressed and lost, and still suffering from what the grafts did to me. I just want to feel normal again. I have had several MRI's done as well as CT scans and X-rays to be sure there is nothing else going on, and it's true, the fat is the problem. Blows my mind... Stomach fat is different then the fat that is in our faces, so why do doctors think it's a good idea to transfer fat from one area of the body to another?! It's dangerous! I don't recommend nor suggest it for any reason. The fat remembers where it came from! Perhaps if someone were to take fat from a surrounding similar region and donate it within the same region, that could work, but never let a surgeon place fat in your face from another part of your body. Now I believe this fat is stuck on my sinuses and is causing lots of problems that I may never rid of. If the very least I can do, please listen to my warning here... Stay away from fat grafts and stay way from Dr. Edward Eades.

This is the first time I have read of an adverse reaction to one's own fat being transferred from the body to the face. Do you have any photos that you could post? Did you notice anything unusual about the fat harvesting process? I wish you well, and hope your lingering issues clear up completely.

This message is in response to "Fat Transfer To Cheeks Literally Ruined My Life"! I am so empathetic to what happened to you and I want you to know that I feel your pain. I also have had devastating consequences from fat transfer and I am now BLIND in my left eye because of it!!!! Yes you heard me correctly....to anyone researching fat grafting and ended up here reading this post, do NOT do it! It is not worth the very serious risks and while there may be lots of satisfied patients happy with their results, there are also countless stories of surgeries gone wrong! I want to stress that my plastic surgeon is rated #1 in the city where I live on rate mds and believe me I did my homework and research when choosing him. The terrible irony here is that I did not go for a consultation with him for fat transfer; I wanted a facelift and he said that I didn't really need it and would be happy with fat transfer as I had lost volume and was hollow around the eyes and cheeks. I wasn't convinced because I had skin laxity and jowls were just starting to form....I am 51 so it's not like I'm too young to have started thinking about a face lift! Anyhow I accepted his advice that fat grafting would fill out my face and that everything would appear lifted as well. He NEVER mentioned the dangers of injecting fat all around the eye area and now thanks to Real Self I have discovered that there are plastic surgeons who will not inject fat anywhere in this area because if any of the many blood vessels are punctured by accident with fat, this fat will travel and block arteries and veins at the back of the eye and cause CRVO....central retinal vein occlusion or worse yet central retinal artery occlusion which there is ZERO remedy or cure for and this means blindness for life. I have both which the multitude of ophthalmologists and specialists I have seen tell me this is extremely rare and they had absolutely no clue until I figured it out when I finally googled Fat Transfer and related blindness. The blindness didn't happen till 4 months after my surgery and at first I didn't put two and two together. I asked the ER doctor and the many doctors following if fat transfer surgery could be the reason but they said they didn't think so and kept doing tests. Most doctors are not educated on the negative consequences of plastic surgery complications and so many things can go wrong. They said I was a complete mystery because I am in such great health and do not have any of the factors to indicate a stroke of the eye or plaque causing the blockage. That's because it wasn't plaque....it was fat! Fat that should not be in my blood vessels!!!! So what other complications am I in for?? It has now been 6 months since the surgery and 2 months since I lost vision so hopefully nothing further will happen. I want to finish by adding that my plastic surgeon was way too aggressive. Besides piercing my blood vessel, instead of being hollow around the eyes, I am the complete opposite! I now have bags and a malar crescent on one side that are highly visible in downward lighting. And the recovery time was brutal....it was months of swelling and bruising, not weeks! I looked hideous for quite a while afterwards! Sorry this is such a long post but I want everyone to know the very serious risks of Fat Transfer....it is NOT worth it!!!!!

You poor thing. OMG. Your story just made me cry. I am literally holding my hands over my still swollen face, trying not to bawl. Are you doing any better at all? You know, these things happen, no matter how good the plastic surgeon is. Dr. Eades said he was one of the first doctors to begin the fat transfer in Tucson AZ... doesn't matter, he did something very wrong whether that means he injected right into my sinuses or something even worse, it is causing me constant battles. I am getting improvement since the fat was removed, and I had a wonderful doctor take it out. I actually have my last injection with Dr. Eades on video if you would like to see it? You can literally see my nose bend in to the left when he made the first injection. No joke.... and since then, my problems arose....

I hope and pray for your recovery. Vision loss is far worse then what I am experiencing and I feel so deeply sorry for you my dear.

A lot of doctors claim to be #1 and can pay for reviews. For procedures like fat transfer, you need to see experts for that specific procedure. Doctors with pages and pages and pages of before and afters, and some of whom have written about the procedure. There are many doctors that specialize in FT that refuse to inject it in the under eye area. Though the risk should be low if the doctor was using a blunt needle. Sorry this happened to you.

What I have learned from my experiences , It seems the more you try and fix things , chances are you are going to make things worse .

Oh I am so sorry for what happened to you. I have scheduled a facial fat transfer, with a good surgeon. He will only inject 2cc each mid cheek area with a blunt needle. Do you think that is risky as well?

SO good that you warn others, really. I feel sorry for you, had a botched surgery as well, lipo. Everything when I see the results I get sick in my stomach and almost fainth, as I just still after 10 year can't accept the results. I just decided not to look at that part, if I look in the mirror.
I didn't know that you can go blind from fatransfer, super scary. I had it last week, but very conservative 2cc each side of the upper cheek.

Hi there, wow I am so sorry to hear this. It sounds scary, and I really hope your a bit better now. Maybe the assymetrical can be fixed with a bit of filler?
I have scheduled an appointment for facial fat transfer, but my dr. will only inject 2cc each cheek in the mid part. Do you also think with a small amount as 2cc (from which 30% reabsorbs) will cause problems?
I got a little scared after reading this.

I have been a patient of Dr. Eades for years. He has done my breast, Tummy and Fat grafting. I think he is the best surgeon. I think you are having a reaction from something that has nothing to do with the fat grafting. I did my research before ever having fat grafting and I knew it was extremely safe. The fat is a great way to fill certain areas in without having to spend crazy amounts of money on fillers. I saw a surgeon in California with a friend of mine who couldn't say enough about how safe fat grafting is. I understand you have something going on but I really think you need to have a full work up from like a specialist that could tell you what is happening with your sinuses.

Wow Barbie, one review and one post all praising Dr. Rates. Do you work with him much? What badthingshappen posted is not only true but has happened to other people on here as well. Please don't discredit her experience just because you clearly want to promote a doctor you work for.

Of the surgeon who removed the fat graft from your face? I’d like to get some fat removed from my lips.

Hi, I´m very sorry for you. Since 2015 I´ve been through the same battle.I had my whole face overfulled with fat and I haven´t even asked for it! Since then I had 2 microlipos, which helped a bit but I´m still overfilled. Could you please say the name of the doctor who helped you? It would be wonderful to have good references. Thank you and I wish you all the best. We´re gonna win this battle!
