I broke my nose ~ 8 years ago and had been having breathing & sleeping issues throughout that period. I decided that I would have an ENT look at my nose and see if surgery was an option. I went to Mount Sinai where the ENT took a look, confirmed that I had a deviated septum from the break, and that surgery was an option. I was referred to Dr. Alexander at this point who I was informed would be conducting the surgery.

Now I hadn’t done any research into the surgery, did not know how common it was, whether I could request a specific surgeon, I basically had no idea what I was getting into. I had never had surgery in my life prior to this. Knowing what I know now, I consider myself extremely lucky to have been referred to Dr. Alexander who, judging by the other glowing reviews here, is one of Toronto’s most gifted cosmetic surgeons.

Dr. Alexander walked me through exactly what was wrong with my nose, how it was affecting my breathing, even pulling up google images to give me a more detailed look at what the surgery would be fixing. I had quite a few questions and he made sure that I understood exactly what the process was, the risks, the outcome, everything. I’m the type of person that likes to understand as much as possible before making a decision and Dr. Alexander was extremely patient and informative, which gave me confidence that I was making the right decision.

The surgery I had was a Septorhinoplasty with a turbinate reduction, which I now know is an extensive surgery. I ended up having quite a lot of bleeding from the turbinate reduction, needing to stay in the hospital overnight. Dr. Alexander made sure I was comfortable and called the hospital that evening to double check on me.

In a very unfortunate coincidence, the same day Dr. Alexander operated on me, he ended up tearing his patellar tendon, which necessitated its own operation that very week. Nevertheless, while being unable to walk, Dr. Alexander phoned me at home a few days after the surgery to check on my recovery and make sure the bleeding I was experiencing had subsided (it had). He told me that he had injured his knee but our 1-week follow up would still be on as scheduled. I went and saw him a few days later and he removed the casts and bandages, all while having a full leg cast on his right leg.

The recovery from the surgery I had was difficult for the first week, with pain and bleeding, but that lasted only about 7-9 days. It’s now been about 6 weeks and the difference in my ability to breathe through my nose is incredible. Prior to the surgery, I had about 40-50% of the air intake I now have. I don’t remember a time when I could breathe through my nose and get enough air to not pass out.

The benefits for me have easily been worth the week’s discomfort and if I could do it again I would in a heartbeat and I would not have anyone other than Dr. Alexander do it.
