After years of being unhappy with my teeth and previously having metal braces as a teenager, wisdom teeth caused my smile to become crowded.
I researched alternative treatments and decided I wanted to invest in Invisalign. I liked the idea of Invisalign because you can remove them if necessary and they're virtually unnoticeable. I found an offer on groupon for Summerhill Gardens Dental (Toronto) for $2995.00 and made a consultation. There was around a 3-4 week waiting list.  I went for a consultation and asked questions about the treatment and found out I would be a good candidate so I went ahead and booked in.  They took xrays and 3D scanning of my teeth which would produce an online timeline of the process and how my teeth would look once finished.  After about two weeks I received my personalized Invisalign treatment plan. It showed I would need 19 trays and some of my lower teeth shaved down 0.5mm each. I would need some attachments after two weeks, and more with trays 14 onwards.  I accepted the treatment, waited for my trays to be made, and scheduled an appointment at the dentist to receive my first trays and have them fitted.
At my first fitting I was shown how to insert/remove the trays and warned they may be painful for the first few days, I was only given two trays (four weeks worth) and scheduled to go back again. I found my teeth ached a lot for the first few days and it was a bit sore taking them out but overall the discomfort was mild. I was brushing my teeth after every meal and wearing them for around 22hrs a day.
At my next appointment I received my attachments and I had opted for Propel. Propel halves your treatment time and allows you to wear each tray for only one week rather than two. It cost an additional $300.  I had to have eight injections in total, which was the only painful part. I then had four holes drilled in my upper and lower jaw. I felt a lot of pressure and the technician had to hold my head still, but no pain due to the numbing. I also had my teeth shaved down which was not painful. The shaved down teeth looked awful at first, but once the spaces had closed they looked great. I don't think my dentist took much care in shaving my teeth as they weren't 100% straight, now the gaps are closed I am left with a little triangle gap between two teeth but it's hard to see by anyone else. They put my trays straight back in, gave me a prescription for some strong pain killers and I went home. I went straight to the pharmacy and what I didn't realize was my trays were filled with blood. Other than that the pain subsided the next day and I could eat as normal.
The rest of the journey was pretty uneventful, the only thing they don't warn you about it when they change the trays towards the end (small indents behind the front teeth) it gives you a lisp where your tongue hits it. It goes away eventually but it was noticeable in my opinion.  At my last appointment I opted for vivera (plastic nighttime retainers) that were an additional $650 and last two years rather than a fixed retainer at my dentists recommendation because it is hard to floss (I was able to recoup 80% of this through my dental insurance). I would recommend this dentist, other than the fact you may have to wait a couple of weeks for consultations and appointments sometimes, overall I am pretty happy with my Invisalign results and would recommend it.
