Dr. Adam Scheiner's laser festoon...

Dr. Adam Scheiner's laser festoon surgery/resurfacing is very intense and risky procedure. If you are considering this procedure then just be prepared to experience constant inflammation, redness, sensitivity, permanent hyperpigmentation and scarring. It is now 8 months post surgery, I haven't seen any improvement in my skin or the treatment of the festoons/malar mounds. I am struggling so much to get my skin back to normal before surgery. I regret every single day for getting this procedure done. I have a great deal of discoloration and unfortunately the damage is so deep that products and other lasers are just not effective. I am in the process of getting treatments by a local dermatologist and I am having to spend thousands of dollars and hours of time away from work and downtime -- I have undergone 5 sessions of two different types of mild lasers to get rid of the hyperpigmentation and redness -- so far I feel like I am not making much progress.

The entire process for Dr. Scheiner's laser surgery is daunting and overly traumatizing. There is a great deal of downtime even after you are done with the vinegar soaks. I nearly lost my job because I had to take 5 weeks off work to be decent enough to meet face to face. I was not anticipating this. The mental and emotional agony of seeing your face so damaged, isolating your self from the world, having your life be on hold and hoping and praying every night for your face to heal is the most traumatic experience one can endure and it's 10 times worse when you don't see any improvement on the condition that you sought treatment for. It's even worse if you are not a local patient because guess what? something goes wrong then you are out of luck and you are faced with additional out of pocket costs on treatments and numerous visits to your dermatologist. I can go on and on about the issues I have had but I am trying to move on and this review is simply something that I felt compelled to write so that anyone considering this procedure gets an honest feedback and not solely rely on the Doctor's advice.

I think its really unfortunate that this happened to me and believe me if I can go back and change things, I would give the world to have another chance on deciding against the procedure. At the end, I felt like I was misled and deceived. I was convinced that traveling cross country, putting my life in jeopardy, locking my self in a hotel room for 2 weeks (doing vinegar soaks) and spending thousands of dollars would all be worth it because I would see significant results in treating a condition that I was genetically predisposed to (nothing to do with sun damage btw). Whether my condition was misdiagnosed, I can't say but what I will say that Dr. Scheiner should have known that his laser procedure would not treat my condition. On top of this all, the procedure aside from the fact that it didn't work for me and damaged my skin, was performed carelessly in a way because the treated areas are in large circles covering my entire cheeks but one side is different than the other and that "feathering" technique he talks about is just crap. I pointed out to him on several occasions that the problem I see on my face is not similar to the patients he has treated and he still proceeded to convince me that I was the perfect patient and would see significant results. I should have been smarter and listened to my gut instinct and unfortunately I was brainwashed with all the marketing hype and the doctor and his staff's persuasions.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am sorry to hear you didn't have a positive experience. What are the names of the other lasers you have used to help with the hyperpigmentation and redness?

Hi Eva, Vbeam pulsed dye laser is for redness and Clear and Brilliant is for hyperpigmentation.

Thanks! And to confirm, you said they have not helped much, is that correct?

So sorry to hear... thank you for posting your experience. I had a "virtual" consultation with Scheiner's office and he recommended probably the same thing that you had done - lower lid laser surgery + canthoplasty + erbium laser. I don't believe I'll be going that route based on A) the cost - will be well over $10K including travel, B) the distance - just like you said, if there are problems, you are in trouble, and C) have heard several stories, including yours, where the outcome was not a good one. These cosmetic procedures can create new problems, even worse problems for that matter. It's very disheartening. Prayers to you that your skin will heal in time and that you will find peace.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you, and I felt compelled to write and let you know that I completely understand what you are going through. I'm also a "victim" of Dr. Scheiner's laser festoon surgery, and I so wish that I could turn back time. I have had nothing but complications from day 1, and at 2 years post-surgery, I continue to suffer from persistent erythema, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, swelling, volume loss, and strange skin texture in the treated areas (my skin is very shiny and waxy-looking). Unfortunately, makeup does nothing to disguise these awful changes. In my opinion, it is very unprofessional and irresponsible to appear on national television, convincing people that it is safe to have parts of their face burned off. This is NOT a routine procedure, as I was led to believe, and it is my hope that nobody else has to suffer through the trauma and aftermath of this surgery. Thank-you for sharing your experience. Hopefully, others will think twice before having this done.

Hi annemarie73 I am sorry to hear that you had negative experiences and outcome with the laser festoon treatment. I am surprised and really nervous to hear that you are still suffering from persistent erythema. This is one of the conditions that I continue to suffer from as well. I can't imagine dealing with it long term. There are so many activities that I can no longer part take because of the persistent erythema. I used to love going to steam rooms, saunas, hot yoga and so on and now I cant do any of those activities. I agree with you and to a great degree I felt misled as well. I was very nervous when I was reading through all the paperwork about the risks and side effects. When I confronted their staff, I was told not to worry because everything they list is very rare but they have to list them as a requirement by the laser company. I was very hesitant and I waited months before I had the procedure and thinking back, I don't think that I would have gone through if it hadn't been for the fact that the procedure was advertised on Dr. Oz. I flew in for a one on one consultation just to make sure Doctor Scheiner saw me in person so that he can be certain I was the right candidate. My entire visit consisted only 15 minutes with the Doctor and the other 2 hours consisted of going through paperwork and watching videos. Thank you for sharing your experience as well and I am sorry that you are dealing with the same nightmare as I am. I hope everything works out for you and me both.

No what I meant was that since I was not a local patient, I wasn't able to visit the Doctor for the problems. I had to seek local doctors. Doctor Scheiner made himself available via telephone but there was nothing he could do to treat the problems I was having. His staff member suggested for me to fly out to Tampa for biweekly treatments. This was not a practical and financially feasible suggestion since I would have to fly cross country, take time off work and pay $500 + for flights. The doctor I am going to now is an amazing dermatologist and she's been helping me get through everything.
