Sick from my Implants - Southlake, TX

I became progressively ill about 2 years ago: fatigue, arthritis, fibromyalgia, extreme cold in my arms and chest, eczema on my scalp, and several other issues but these were the worst and most problematic. A friend recently suggested that my implants you could be the source of my illness. I was shocked to find how many women were sick from their implants just like me. With the same symptoms. After 2 years of visits to many different specialists who concluded that they just didn't know what was wrong with me, other than auto immune disease (my panels were positive for lupus and Sjogren's), I knew the implants were the source of my illness. At 46, I felt 76. I was previously very active physically running half marathons, doing yoga. Both of which I had to give up because of the extreme pain I felt in my joints and muscles daily. I did my research and decided on Dr. Jonathan Heistein for removal of my implants. He also did a full capsulectomy, a procedure he does regularly, and has a high level of skill at. I wanted my breasts as tight as possible and a full anchor lift. My previous 34 Ds are now a 34B. I am at day 9 now. It was more painful than I expected. I had a lot of bruising (probably due to my autoimmune issues, as I bruise very easily). But immediately I could tell Dr. Heistein did a great job. They look so good. Today is the first day I am not in pain, just a little sore. I can't wait to see what they look like when they are mostly healed. The eczema on my scalp is nearly gone and I am no longer cold. I am optimistic that in the next year I will continue to see improvements in my health. Sorry no pictures yet.

Day 12. I continue to see little changes in my health. Formerly, I was freezing cold in my upper body-arms and chest. By 5:00 pm, I was bundled in sweaters, sweatshirts, even in August in Texas. I was able to sleep with only a heated mattress pad and a heating pad across my chest. Otherwise, I would awake with racking chills. Since the surgery, I have been warm. No more freezing chills! I have been warm most days, even with the change in weather we have experienced. My arthritis continues to improve a little everyday. Fewer "crackles" and aches. My scalp did look amazing on Thanksgiving day. I showed my friends how my eczema was gone and how shiny my hair was. However, the eczema returned. I think it was a good sign of things to come and as my body heals after the surgery I will continue to improve. And here is the best part: My breasts look good! Finally, the painful bruises are getting better and the swelling is going down. I should have realized I would probably bruise very badly-- I used to bruise from scratching a simple mosquito bite. My breasts are perky and pretty. And once all of the bruises and stitches heal, I can see how pretty they will be. I am very happy with them.

Dr Heistein put in my implants and i am now having him take them out with a lift. I was wondering how you are now and if you are happy with your decision.

Looking great and feeling great!

The soreness is going away finally. My energy levels continue to grow, and I am feeling like my old self again. I do not miss those heavy, bulky implants. I feel so light. I had no idea how much they were in the way. I even posed in a picture today with my girlfriends wearing a bikini top for a much earlier planned group photo. That took some guts. Other than the fresh scars I hid under the bikini top, they looked pretty good and they're all mine!

I am human again

A following is a list of symptoms and problems that have disappeared since my implant removal. I am 5 weeks out today, most I noticed within 2 weeks:
Chronic fatigue
Muscle pain
Joint pain and weakness
Muscle twitches, fasciculations and spasms
Eczema and dry scalp
Melasma
My eyes are whiter, my skin is glowing
Normal body temperature-no chills
Moodiness and depression
Low sex drive
Vaginal dryness
I no longer wake up in the morning feeling like I have the flu. In fact, I can barely sleep 7 hours now, whereas the past 2 years I have needed 9 and never felt rested. The strength has returned in my upper body. My joints no longer crackle. I have tons of energy and a very positive attitude. I feel like the person I used to know. I have not posted an update because I am just too busy living life with new found energy!
I miss my larger breasts but I am getting used to how I look. I actually like how clothes fit me better without the implants. Everyone tells me I look like I lost weight. I am going to buy some sexy, unsupportive bathing suit tops to enjoy the new look. The scars are healing nicely and the swelling is gone.
Any time I think about how I wish I had my old breasts, I remember that I got my health back by removing them. So worth it!
I hope that I am the exception. I hope that most women are not going through what I did. I also wish we had an alternative to silicone (and saline inside silicone). I called my rheumatologist to tell him how much better I was. He said there was a ton of literature and studies done 20 years ago about "implant illness" but nothing lately. I can't believe with the growing number of women getting implants that it is not still a huge problem and most women are completely unaware.
If anyone is thinking that their health problems may be due to their implants, they should really look into it. Not many doctors are aware of this problem but I can tell I am certainly not alone.

Dear Child, women are aware but you know the old saying, "it won't happen to me". Back 40 years ago, when I had my first set of implants placed, I was told there was no problem with anything and that, if someone stabbed me in the chest with a knife, they would not be punctured. What a story! I'm afraid we think with our hearts and not our minds when we are looking in the mirror and seeing breasts that don't please us. It's really a shame that women-myself included- don't accept our bodies as a gift from God and like ourselves as He made us. You make a great choice. Thank you for sharing and have a Happy New Year..

Agreed. Thank you for your thoughts. I am in the health care field and I see many women daily who may not see their next Christmas. I am grateful for my health and the time I have on this planet. Removing the implants has helped me enjoy every day even more.

I have asked God to forgive me for not appreciating the body he gave me. My saline implants have made me so sick. I'm in the process of looking for a ps remove them.

Hi AMyers; you are several months post explantation no: Can you tell me how your health is fairing at this point. Do you feel a lot better than you did 3 months after the surgery?
December 19, 2015
Sorry that I am just replying to your question. I have not been on Real Self in a while.
Feeling amazing still. I saw many improvements immediately and then more with time. I also developed a lot of allergies to chemicals after they were removed. A full year later, I feel great. I just had my one year follow up visit. My scars are nearly gone and my breasts look beautiful. Dr. Heistein did a great job. I am so happy with my decision. I saw an old picture of myself the other day and I thought that I actually look slimmer now, even though I have not lost a pound. I do sometime envy women with full, beautiful breasts but implants are not for me. I am grateful for the new, healthy life I have been able to live.

Thank you for the reply. God bless you. I got mine out on December 3rd by Dr. Melmed in Dallas and I like the new me and health improvement. It's not instant but I like the progress so far.

I'm a PhD candidate writing on this subject. No one wants to discuss the possible causal link between a genetic predisposition for autoimmune disease (I am hypothyroid) and health issues experienced even with INTACT silicone implants. I 55 yo and currently about 10 weeks post explantation. I ran a half marathon in the rain at 7 weeks POST explantation and have not felt this strong in over 15 years. Keep the stories coming.

Thank you for sharing your story and testimony. I was diagnosed with Lupus, ten like magic (I give that “magic” to a ton of prayer and glory to God) but still have aches, pain and extreme fatigue on certain days... Apparently that’s due to Sjögren’s and may have it the rest of my life due to the H pylori virus but stories like yours are truly inspiring! So incredibly happy for you and your health!! I can’t say enough how much I miss training 7 days a week (I had implants during that time too) however after having my so, everything changed. I truly pray that breast illnesses and information would be more available to women as the pain that anyone goes through having an auto-immune disease, isn’t one I would wish on my worst enemy. Celebrating you and your health today!
