I wasn't ugly or horribly deformed, but I just found myself constantly putting effort into "hiding" some of my features. I figured it would be worth it just to free my mind to think about other endeavors, and to stop feeling uneasy about the occasional picture from a bad angle. This is one of those things that is really easy to put off, and I had been putting it off for some time. But, at some point you think "I wish I had done it last year" and then you realize next year you will be thinking the exact same thing... Okay, I knew it was time to schedule consultations.
I had fairly realistic expectations. I wasn't trying to look like a different person, and I realized that results are never perfectly predictable. I didn't ask my surgeon to make me look like a celebrity, and I wasn't too specific about how I wanted the nose to be shaped. I just wanted my features to be more in proportion to one another. I was going for a straighter, pointier nose and a bigger chin. I picked my surgeon because his before and after pictures aligned with what I was looking for, and because he did excellent revisions. I figured my first-time-rhinoplasty would be simple compared to a revision, so I knew I would be in good hands.
Surgery day was fairly simple. I put on the robes, got on the bed, had all my vitals checked, and got an IV. I was a tiny bit nervous but it wasn't too bad at all. I saw my surgeon one last time to make sure I was still happy with the plan, and talked about any other concerns I may have. Then I was wheeled off to the OR and the anesthesiologist put me under. I woke up a few hours later in a bit a pain, but that was quickly managed with some oral painkillers.
Recovery doesn't last long, but my face did things I have never seen before. Swelling pushed my nose up so high I looked like a pig, I thought I would never be able to breath through my nose again, and there was a weird lump or skin flap inside one of my nostrils. Four days in things really start to calm down and return to normal. Two weeks later you start to think "that wasn't so bad" and by three months you have almost totally forgotten the ordeal. I treated my nose very carefully the whole time, and I think that has paid off.
I think my results are great, very natural. Even at 2 weeks people who knew me didn't realize I had anything done. I would openly tell everyone, it's not a secret. But before I told people, I would get a lot of "your hair looks good" or "your beard looks good" or "have you been working out?" but thankfully nobody ever said "what happened to your nose?" I am totally satisfied.
