Smiles Direct Club is a RIPOFF, GO TO AN ACTUAL DENTIST! They Damage Your Teeth and Gums and Charge $2300+ for It.
DON’T TRUST THESE SCAMMERS, they will deny your refund even if you are unsatisfied with your results. GO TO REAL DENTIST. Should have noticed all the Red Flags.
Let me start by saying, this has probably been one of the most unprofessional and dissatisfying services/products I have ever purchased or been a part of. Will be providing you with in-depth review and proof of our communication and pics.
My Story
I hear about Smile Direct Club so, I’m all excited and sign-up to go get a 3D scan.
The scan took place in a shared workspace office in downtown Miami, FL. (red flag #1)
There were no professional dentist/orthodontist. (red flag #2)
A regular sales guy scanned my teeth. I saw in the 3D model that there was still a gap in the middle of my teeth.
I specifically asked him, “Why is there still a gap in the model?
He says “oh, don’t worry, this is only an estimate. A smiles direct professional will re-evaluate this and fix anything that needs to be adjusted.”
Then why when I requested a refund, did Smiles Direct Club say “However, because you met the predicted results, a refund is not warranted.”? And they sent me an exact image of the 3-D model (see pictures) the sales associate showed me and told me not to worry about. I’m baffled. The only way I meet the predicted results is when the aligners are on. Literally, a few minutes after I take them off, the teeth spread out right away and the gap becomes immediately visible. (see pictures) (MY MAIN CONCERN) I wore the aligners for the whole treatment for 6 months and received my retainers. I noticed my teeth still had a lot of GAPS in them so I went to do a revision. They told me there is nothing they could do about it and that I should be happy with my smile. They also told me I should go and get additional work done on my teeth. (flag #100)
Dissatisfied with product & results
I still have plenty of GAPS in the top front teeth. I also have larger GAPS now between my canine’s. (see pics)
Not to mention, that every single aligner/retainer was not cut properly for the back of my gums. I had to adjust every pair of aligners myself. All smiles direct club did was re-allocate the GAPS. I now have bigger GAPS on the sides of my teeth. I still have a GAP in the middle. Smile direct club clearly can see the anatomy of my teeth from the beginning because of the scan. I was never told my teeth would not be fully corrected and would need additional work to fix my teeth. If I was told this in the beginning, I would have never agreed to ordering these incapable aligners. My obvious main concern is the GAPS in the front of my teeth and you know that because you scanned my teeth. I also filled it out in a questionnaire. The only thing you fixed was a problem with my bottom tooth that was barely even noticeable. My GAPS are all still there. This just doesn't make sense.
Don't you think it would have been nice if someone at SDC would have said to me, "Hey, by the way, I don't think we can fix your problem all the way with the smiles protocol. Do you still want to do this?"
Instead, you just care about your money and will do anything to complete a sale. I'm not going to be paying $2350 for you not to correct the issue I came to you for. This has been a horrible experience. My main concern was my front teeth GAP and when I went to go do the scan, they told me this was an estimate, not exact results. That statement made me feel confident that my GAPS that I've always wanted to get rid of would finally be gone. And IT'S NOT! There is still an obvious GAP plus addition larger GAPS on the canine teeth. I'm not happy with the results. (see pics)
I came to Smiles Direct to fix my teeth. Smiles Direct Club also recommended that I fix the spaces in my teeth myself by going to a dentist From an email from them, “Spaces like this can usually be corrected, after treatment is complete, with bonding or veneers.”
If I wanted my dentist to fix my teeth, I would have asked the dentist. It's not fair that Smiles Direct would ask me to get additional work done on my teeth because they could not deliver on their promise of "straighten my teeth and closing GAPS”
Product/Service
Aligners
All the aligners themselves were also dysfunctional when arrived. Some of my teeth in the back have gums partially over the tooth. The 3-D scanner apparently didn’t pick that up so they sent me all my aligners with coverage for a whole tooth, when putting the aligners over that tooth is physically impossible (Red flag #150) I had to cut every single aligner end myself and shave them all down because I was in SEVERE PAIN when I tried to put them on like they came from the box. I actually had to miss work and school of the excruciating pain I was in.
Retainers
Same problem with aligners that I had with retainers. Had to cut the back but the retainers were even worse. I had to cut the top and bottom of them to make them shorter because they were beginning to recede my gum line and were EXTREMELY PAINFUL. It doesn’t make sense to charge me $2350 to damage my mouth.
My orthodontist told me that these aligners are actually causing more damage then they are helping because of the space left in between my teeth. They are being held with force with space in between them so they could eventually fall out.
Customer service
Smiles Direct Club customer service is terrible and they send you through hoops and loops just to talk to a Smile Direct Club “professional” if there are even any actual professionals there. Seems like I’m talking to some automated robot through email. They take over a week to respond to emails and when you want to speak to a “professional” it takes another week or so to get a response from them. When you respond to the “professional”, they redirect you to another receptionist who again takes 7+ days to respond and then forwards it to another “professional” who takes another 7+ days to respond. I also called the numbers they provided but when I called it was an automated number & I could not get to any supervisors or anyone in a higher position.
Some Smiles Direct Club customer service and "professionals" email quotes:
1. "After careful review, your Dentist has determined that no further movement can occur on your teeth with Smile Direct Club protocols. The reason you still see spaces on the side is to keep your teeth in a healthy occlusion (bite). If we tried to close those spaces by pulling your canines forward we would risk compromising your bite, which we do not want. Spaces like this can usually be corrected, after treatment is complete, with bonding or veneers."
What’s wrong with this:
1. asking me to go spend extra money
2. not telling me this in the beginning
2. "I have looked over your photos and I see the gap you are referring to. However this is caused from the anatomy of your teeth, which is a more cosmetic issue."
What’s wrong with this:
1. not telling me this in the beginning
3. "I am a Supervisor here and have reviewed your photos and concerns. I have attached a screenshot of your 3D plan predicted end result for you to view. It appears the spacing at the biting edge of your two upper front teeth was predicted in the 3D rendering. As previously advised, this is something your local dentist can address further with dental bonding, but not something aligners will be able to close without causing additional spacing at the top of the gumline. I do see your plan was uploaded and approved on your account as of February 8th."
What’s wrong with this:
1. not telling me this in the beginning
4. "It is my understanding that you are not happy with the space between your two front teeth…….
This can be easily fixed by visiting your local dental provider after treatment is complete for cosmetic options to fill the spaces.
However, because you met the predicted results, a refund is not warranted. Please remain in your retainer to keep your smile beautiful."
What’s wrong with this:
1. asking me to go spend extra money
2. not telling me this in the beginning
Conclusion:
Smiles Direct Club is a scam. Horrible customer service. Okay product. My teeth made very little movement as you can see in the before and after. Definitely, not worth $2350. It was work about $300 in my opinion. While, it did straighten my teeth a little bit, it is WAY OVERPRICED. In the end, you’ll need additional work to have your teeth the way you want. They also make it a mission and a half to get your money back. DON’T BUY SMILES DIRECT CLUB. Waste of money, waste of time. Only buy smiles direct if your front teeth need little to no work and you feel like spending $2300+ on it. I’m sure most of these reviews on BBB are fake and done by Smiles Direct themselves.
Please do your research and see what others are saying that are not on smile direct clubs website. You'll see that they have ruined a lot of people with their scam.
My request
I would simply just want my money back. I'm not satisfied with my product, service, results and not satisfied with the way smiles direct is handling this matter. It's that simple. If Smile Direct Club could see the way my teeth were going to turn out, why would you not tell me that I would need additional work from a dentist at the beginning instead of at the end? I just don't understand the logic.
I am hereby demanding that the company gives me a FULL REFUND of my $2350 due to their severe negligence and misinformation, which clearly had a negative impact on my treatment. SDC has yet to acknowledge their misinformation and their apparent self-contradiction over these months of transition. I am sorely upset that THEIR negligence and lack of consistency and communication impacted my treatment, and that they have done nothing to address my concrete concerns. Overall, SDC left me larger gaps on the side of my teeth and I still have a gap in the middle of my teeth which is the only thing I wanted fixed.
I do plan on reaching out the American dentist association, BBB and anyone else to spread the word. I also have a pretty large social media following which I plan to show them this so they avoid making a terrible mistake like I did. It doesn’t make sense to charge me $2350 to damage my mouth.
