I had braces when I was younger, but after years of not wearing my retainer my teeth had moved. Now a bit older I wanted to nudge my teeth back.

I had no trouble with the impression kit and eagerly awaited my treatment plan. After a few weeks I got an email linking to my treatment and everything looked great. My lower teeth had a bonded retainer and hadn’t moved so my treatment would only involve my upper teeth (although I did make and send in impressions of my lowers). My whole treatment would take four months.

Month one and two went smoothly and my aligner arrived on time and fit well. I will note than the first time I removed my first aligner it pulled out a cosmetic bonding I had on one of my teeth that fixed a chip in my tooth. My first few aligner did have some plastic edges that were a bit irritating but I was able to file those edges ways with the included file.

My aligner for month three arrived on time, but there were a few issues. First, I received upper AND lower aligners. Lowers had never been a part of my treatment plan and I wasn’t sure why they were included. The upper aligners I received for month three were misshapen. Each of the aligners was bent and dented in the same places. I emailed support about these issues. They never replied to my inquiry, but did send out a second set of month three aligners.

Month four was went well and I was pleased with how my teeth looked. I wore my final aligner for several weeks and then I decided it was time to order my retainer.

4/27 - I ordered my retainer

5/19 - I inquired about my order and was told shipment takes 2-3 weeks.

6/19 - I inquired again and was told that my retainer was in production and would ship by 6/29

7/6 - I inquired about the status of my retainer and I was told they would look into it and get me an update.

It is now 7/9 that I am writing this review. My final aligner cracked from being worn for several weeks beyond its lifespan due to my wait for my retainer. My teeth are back where they were maybe half way through this process. In fact, because the aligners broke a bonding on one of my teeth, my teeth now look worse than they did when I first started this journey and I’m about 2K in the hole. I would recommend a system that either is supervised by a doctor or a system with knowledgeable accessible customer support. I’d also add that for four months of upper only treatment I paid the same price as someone treated for eight months top and bottom. The pricing is a flat rate and not reflective of the complexity of treatment. I knew that getting into it, but after the customer service and damaged products I received it irks me.

I feel stupid for having trusted this company and I would recommend others avoid Smile Direct Club.

We're sorry to hear that you've gotten this impression. We want to be clear that our consent and history documentation that each customer must read and sign before beginning treatment explains the risks and benefits of wearing any aligner. While we're a young and fast growing company, it's always our priority to provide efficient and helpful service. In addition, each customer's treatment is overseen by a dentist or orthodontist licensed in their state, and we now have a dental team of dental professionals available to speak to clinical concerns via chat, phone, and email.
