VSG with Dr. Jorge Maytorena, MD, Tijuana, Mx
$3,899
Currently 203lbs. 5'6" tall. 53 years *old.* My goal is a 53lb weight loss.
July 4 is my big day with Dr. Maytorena and staff. Thanks to fellow Sleevers who've shared their journeys, I couldn't be more excited to make this happen. Your experiences, suggestions, and advice have lead me to this next chapter. Without you, I wouldn't have had the confidence to move forward. NOT because the procedure is outside of the U.S., but because I'm convinced the procedure works! (In viewing post-op Sleevers' experiences, I've found that Dr. Maytorena's patients appear to have the best results with the most consistency. This was the catalyst to having chosen Dr. Maytorena and Staff.)
(PS: RS program insists upon a star rating, but I've not yet had surgery. If you don't hear back from me, I want my stars back! ;)

July 2, 2018. Two days prior to surgery.
5'6", CW 203lbs, GW 150lbs.
Paying this forward for all the Sleevers who have been courageous enough to share their journeys.
In 2005 I lost the ability to run, which was a very significant part of my life, and a devastating loss. I ran six to ten miles per day, seven days per week for years. This, according to doctors was the likely cause of the femoral acetabular impingement that development in both hips, requiring multiple hip replacements. (Two implants failed, and I was in a wheelchair for almost a year.)
When the first implant failed, I tried swimming laps, but developed severe shoulder pain, and wasn't diagnosed until 2012 with coracoacromial impingement; a very painful, congenital defect that feels like knives stabbing into my shoulder muscles anytime I have to lift or raise my arms, i.e., putting dishes away, swimming, getting dressed, Pilates, etc.
Before my Cobra expired I was able to have the right shoulder and hip repaired, but the left hip and shoulder remain impaired, and very painful. As an orthopedic doctor once told me, "...you're simply asking your body to carry more weight than it's built for." (I've a small to medium size frame.) I'm convinced that if I'd been able to have my left hip repaired, I'd have returned to running by now. For me, running was the *cure all* to stress, weight management, self-empowerment, and inner peace.
A decline in health, a hurtful divorce, loss of work, the passing of both of my parents with whom I was extremely close, and two brothers have been the catalyst to some poor eating habits, and lack of interest in making favorable decisions.
It's been a year now, and I'm ready to put a lot of the negative self-talk and sadness behind me, and return to life's journey. It's my hope that a VSG will lend some hope to a new lease on life and improved health. Dr. Maytorena's assistant, Ruben, has convinced me that I'm an excellent candidate for this procedure, and has given me hope that I might find some semblance of my former self. Baby steps. :)

You are a strong person! You have overcome and been thru so many obstacles. This should be a breeze for you with a reward at the end!!! I am so happy for you!! I am sorry for the loss of your parents. I recently lost my own father March 11th of this year. I do know how you feel. I am 57 and wanting this surgery also. I am 5'4" and 196 pounds. Getting older I am not as brave as I was at your age. Hoping to gain some confidence as I follow your journey. Will be thinking of you!! God Bless!!

Will you be traveling alone? I am from Pennsylvania. I was wondering what a plane ticket would cost from there to SanDiego airport? Just wanted to get an idea how much extra aside from surgery cost it would be?

Hi Rochelle, Thanks so much for the kind words and support! And I pray you're right about it being a breeze! For whatever reason, I keep questioning the efficacy of the procedure, yet I've read SO MANY success stories, and with a 100% satisfaction rating from Real Self patients I know my doubts are just skepticism. After talking with Ruben all these days, and following Dr. Maytorena all these years, I've total faith in that they know what they're talking about. (And my trust doesn't come easily.) Yes. I'll be on my own for this adventure as I've not shared my decision with friends. I've one family member left, and I shared my decision with her today. There's something about having to justify and defend such a personal decision that sharing turns me off. The results will speak for themselves. As for the side costs, I was able to get a round trip ticket to San Diego for $250.00, which surprised me a little. Medical insurance for Mx was an additional $87.00. I've ordered multivitamins for post-op care. From what I understand, that's a lifetime commitment of about $15.00/month. I've purchased much of the post-op foods, (liquids) for the week after the procedure, but I'm convinced that in time the savings in groceries will offset the cost of the procedure. ;) Stress and bereavement have been E.V.I.L. on my psyche and my body! Domino effect, you know? As for timing, the means and the free time had been my greatest challenges. I left my job after my hip failed. At the same time my parents were needing assistance with daily living, so I chose to care for them until they passed, which was very costly economically, but WELL WORTH the sacrifice for the time we had together. I had two cars and sold one to afford this opportunity, and I no longer have the 24/7/365 care-taker's responsibilities I once did. (Though I'd give just about anything to have my parents back!) They'd be nothing less than thrilled to know I'm focusing on improving my mind, body, and soul! Once I had so much energy I *never* stopped going. Working, school, hobbies, traveling, managing my parents' home, my home, my business, etc. I'll be able to return to so much of what I love if I'm able to lose this weight! Only time will tell, but I may even get to begin training again! (Running.) Yikes! This is probably a LOT more information than you wanted, but I'm just to happy to finally be taking this step, and want to share my journey, and if possible, help others who are also plagued with the maladies of obesity. God bless you too, and I hope you'll let me know if/when you decide to *sleeve!*

Thank you for responding back! Oh, that is great you have the cash for your surgery! I will have to charge mine or wait for income tax return next year. How did your surgery go? Did you still go on the 4th?
