Life-Changing Surgery with Dr. Younger

I thought I would write this review of my experience with Dr. Younger and also describe the process in case this helps others who are contemplating surgery because I was apprehensive about getting surgery. I am so glad I did, and it has changed my life.

I had a complicated septoplasty done by Dr. Ritchie Younger that no other ENT specialist could do. Every regular ENT specialist referred me to Dr. Younger because he was the only surgeon skilled enough for very complex surgeries such as mine. In fact, some of the regular ENTs said that they referred family members to Dr. Younger because he is one of the most experienced and skilled surgeons around.

I was very nervous about getting this surgery because a previous ENT in another province tried but could not correct it. I had been living with a severely deviated septum for several decades which affected every aspect of my life since I could not breathe at all through my nose. I knew I had to do something but I was worried about trying to get it fixed again because the previous doctor could not correct it and there was weeks of extreme pain and discomfort with no results. I finally decided to make an appointment with Dr. Younger because I could not live with the deviated septum any longer. I made an appointment and when I had an initial consult I felt confident in him and at ease because he demonstrated a great sense of humour, patience, attentiveness, and knew exactly how to fix the problem. He has something like 40 years of experience doing this and everyone I spoke with who knew someone who had surgery by him - including other doctors - said he's the best.

Come the day of surgery I was confident but still nervous because, well, it's surgery. I followed all of the protocols for surgery and was on time - even early. When I went through pre-op, Dr. Younger came over and kindly went through what he was going to do, and as always, he did so with mixing some kind humour in our discussion to keep me at ease. I had a general anaesthetic, and was put under with no complications. When I came to and was coherent again, Dr. Younger said everything went really well, and he gave me instructions for the coming week. I was so happy to hear this and went home and rested.

The next day I followed the instructions and removed the nasal packing. When I did so, I was overwhelmed with happiness because I could feel a lot of air going through both airways in my nose. I was so relieved. I previously had a 1% airway, which made life really uncomfortable for decades. About a day after I removed the nasal packing it started to naturally fill with fluids that is part of the healing process. I didn't bruise at all and there was no overt swelling, which I found amazing.

I took the antibiotics and pain-killers as prescribed for the week following surgery. Lots of resting, reading, and watching favourite movies. It was not bad at all. I only felt a bit of discomfort, but I didn't feel any pain to my surprise (except if something lightly touched my nose, then it was painful). I imagine this is because Dr. Younger did his job really well. The process was not at all what I remembered from a previous surgery from another doctor, as this time I felt decent, though tired and a bit of discomfort. I was so, so happy that I decided to get surgery.

I followed my gut feeling as well as my research of all the different surgeons, and I am overjoyed that I chose him as my surgeon for such an incredibly important operation for my quality of life and happiness. One of the best choices I've ever made, and it was a success. He is the absolute best. I would travel across the world to get surgery from him knowing what I do now. He is that good, but he is humble about it. I don't even know if he completely realizes how skilled he is because he is down-to-earth, easy to talk with, and it's easy to relate to him. Everyone knows he is the best, though. Some people are so incredibly skilled at things that it seems normal and natural. I think he's an enigma as a surgeon. As perfect as a surgeon can get. He actually cares as well. I would never want this kind of surgery done by anyone other than him. I unreservedly recommend him, if you are thinking of surgery of this kind. Best surgeon there is, in my opinion. Well, I hope my experience of surgery helps you feel at ease and have the courage and motivation to take the first step in whatever life-changing surgery you are contemplating. My experience with Dr. Younger has been amazing.
