I debated whether I would write a review of my experience of undergoing a Vaser Hi-Def procedure at The Selston Clinic in Nottingham this May 2014, but sat here 4 months post I've decided to sum up my journey.
I'll put a header over each chunk of review, so you can skip to the bit that interests you most - I'll keep it brief as possible! Please remember this is my perception of the process and how it felt to me.
I'll start with the summary, so you can decide whether you want to read more:
I am sure that both Dr. Bassi and Mags are nice people and reading other reviews on this site they would agree with that.
My results are not poor, though they could have been much better if only pre and post care were a consideration at The Selston Clinic. Let's not forget that I chose to go ahead with this treatment, no-one forced my hand, so I am taking full responsibility of my decision to spend my money, and trust with Dr. Bassi and his team.
I wouldn't consider my Vaser Hi-Def at The Selston Clinic as cheap, though I would happily have paid more for a polished service and gold standard pre and post care.
Would I have this procedure again? Probably yes. Would I use Selston Clinic again? Probably not.
Initial consultation:
I travelled just short of 4 hours for my consultation, and if I'm honest I had already told myself, 'if you're travelling that far, you're going to book it'!
I wasn't guided by Selston's slogan '…expertise of Harley Street at competitive, friendly village prices.' - I'm far more interested in quality of service and personal recommendation, which previous clients of Dr. Bassi had written about on this site.
I had also read that the clinic was based in a NHS G.P practice, that seemed a little odd to me, though it also gave me some confidence that I would be seen by a board registered Doctor.
I arrived at the clinic, and yes, it was a Doctor's surgery - I ignored the screams in my head that said 'it doesn't feel right'.
I was seen quite quickly by Dr. Bassi and within 15 minutes I was drawn on, told that I was a good candidate for this procedure and suggested that I have my upper arms done too, apparently it would save me months of hard work at the gym.
It would probably help here for me to tell you that I'm a slim guy with pockets of stubborn fat especially on the flanks. I go to the gym at least twice a week and would class myself as having an active lifestyle. If middle age is mid thirties, that's the box I would tick!
Back to this 15 minutes - I was told how much it would cost, and in-between Dr. Bassi taking a personal phone call, I was done. His nurse came in and scheduled my procedure, swiped my card for £400.00, gave me a booklet to read and told me to buy the support garments recommended. Before I knew it I was back in the car headed home. Not one question about my medical history was asked, and no mention of the blood tests referred to on Selston's website. I wasn't concerned about this, after all Dr. Bassi is a General Practitioner.
I felt excited about the procedure and took photos of my drawn on six pack when I got home. Next hurdle was telling my partner, though that's another story!
Waiting for the procedure:
I read the information booklet that Mags (Dr. Bassi's nurse) gave me, probably 4 to 5 times, and I still had questions.
I called the clinic and Mags answered, I asked politely, 'Would you have time to answer a couple of questions for me?'. Mags response, 'as long as it is quick as I'm due in clinic'. I did ask the questions, though felt pressured not to keep Mags from her work.
I put the phone down and realised that I had more questions! My plan was to leave it until the following week, write down my questions and call back again. I did this, and in all my politeness and apologetic tone called back, 'would you have time to answer a couple of questions for me?'. Mags response, 'as long as it is quick as I'm due in clinic'.
I was taken aback by the same response and even though I had my questions written down, I wasn't made to feel that there was time. So I asked the ones I felt were most important.
Putting the phone down from Mags I felt annoyed with myself for not asking all the questions - they were all important to me.
Two week's before my adonis body...
I've received no letter confirming the procedures (my abs were being completed at the first appointment and a week later my flanks and upper arms would be done), and no call from anyone at Selston clinic to check, well to check anything!
I had some questions about the post care, so called the clinic for a third time, and Mags answered. Skip to Mags response, 'as long as it is quick....'. I was a little way past frustrated at this stage and pointed out to Mags how the previous calls had gone. Mags response, 'would you like me to cancel your treatment?'. I was so dumbfounded by this I was silent. When I found my voice I said that I was very much looking forward to the procedure, but had questions, and expected that they would be answered. We said goodbye and ended the call.
Mags then sent the following email, which is copied and pasted as sent to me....
“Have looked at the emails, as i said on the phone, foam will be provided at your visit with information on how to use it and how long for. If you have questions then by all means phone, no one is too busy to answer quick queries. As long as you are prepared for the procedure and know that you have to have aftercare after the procedure, that is our main concern. Once the procedure has taken place then strict aftercare instructions are given and you are followed up carefully.”
My response was along the lines of 'I'm just a little nervous, along with excited and want to ensure I'm fully aware of what I need to do'. I didn't receive a response though wasn't expecting one either.
Day of first procedure...
My partner came with me so I could travel back home after the procedure. We set off on the lengthy journey and arrived one hour before as advised in the booklet. I sat in the dedicated waiting room and Dr. Bassi came in and asked who I was there to see - a bit disconcerting seeing as within the hour he would be taking a part of me away!
I was asked to sign, print my name and date every page of the information booklet, approximately 15 pages. I've had other procedures and did feel this was overkill, and dissolving Selston Clinic of any malpractice. I didn't want to sign the right to my pre and post procedure photos being published. I was made to feel as if I was being awkward, I wasn't. I just wanted to protect my identity.
Dr. Bassi directed me into his office and asked whether I wanted a Valium before the procedure - I accepted. After taking the pre-meds I removed my clothes and Dr. Bassi sketched my new physique onto my stomach in preparation for the Vaser. Whilst the meds were taking effect Dr. Bassi checked through my signatures on each page and asked me to sign the photo disclosure that I had previously declined. At this point I could barely see clearly and my legs felt like jelly. I do remember saying that I didn't mind having the photos taken as long as they were for personal comparison and not publication - I signed the form, silly I know, and I take responsibility for this.
The procedure was quick and thanks to the local anaesthetic felt no pain, just some pinching. Dr. Bassi was assisted by Dr. Vlok which made the process more efficient.
I was padded up and all support belts fitted - still feeling the effects from the Valium. Dr. Bassi then talked through the post care and said how important his instructions were, 'it's like laying out a carpet' he explained.
Week post first procedure:
Off I went home with a week to go before my second procedure. During this week I had no contact at all from the clinic, though told to text a mobile number if I had any problems.
I followed what I could remember from Dr. Bassi's instructions and felt that I was doing everything as told. This included starting with lymphatic massage drainage and applying the layers of padding each day - a chore, but important.
It was a tiring week and more emotionally draining than physical discomfort. The lymphatic massage was painful at times, though I justified this with the no pain no gain mantra!
Day of second procedure:
All padded up, and as before my partner came with me. Arrived one hour early as asked - feeling more prepared this time.
Dr. Bassi asked me to take off the padding so he could assess his work, and the look of disappointment on his face was, well not comforting! I could see quite clearly myself that there wasn't any definition, though he had told me that the swelling would come and go, so I wasn't all that concerned. He asked for confirmation that I'd been wearing the garments 24/7, and I confirmed yes.
He asked whether I'd been wearing the support belts too, and my stomach dropped. In my Valium haze I thought he said to remove them after the first 24 hours, which I did. This could have easily been rectified if only someone from the clinic called to check on me a day or so after the first procedure - they didn't.
Anyway, he eventually said, 'it's not all lost' and suggested that I put extra padding in the chiselled out areas to stop the fluid from building up.
My flanks and arms were marked up for today's procedure, 2 Valium taken and a similar experience to the week previous, minus Dr. Vlok, even though I was told he would be assisting.
After the procedure I was taken back into Dr. Bassi's office. No one asked if I wanted a drink or if I was feeling okay, though no-one did last week, so I guess I wasn't expecting it.
Still drowsy from the Valium Dr. Bassi said he would see me at my review. My partner was waiting for me in the waiting area used for NHS patients. As we were walking towards the car my partner told me he'd been asked by Mags to go and buy bandages from a local chemist. These bandages were used to wrap up my arms.
I was so drowsy at this point that I didn't really think about it. Though how crazy and completely unprofessional it is to not be prepared for a procedure that had been in their schedule for the past 8 weeks.
Week post second procedure:
Sticking rigidly to the routine of padding, including the additional pads to help attach the skin to the underlying tissue, and of course, the support belts. It's a bore though it's become routine. More lymphatic massages this week - I ended up having eleven, which is more than recommended. Continued with the self massage and ultrasound gadget for another 4 weeks.
Again, no contact at all from The Selston Clinic - no contact means no email, text, phone call, letter...pigeon carrier!
Four weeks post first procedure:
The swelling appears far less, and I can see some definition, though Adonis, I am not!
I almost decided to not bother with the follow-up appointments with Dr. Bassi and at the last minute chose to take the 4 hour car journey to see him. With absolute no exaggeration I was with Dr. Bassi for 10 minutes and back in the car heading home!
He looked at his work and asked me to lay flat on a couch and (finding this laughable now) said 'you can really see the definition when you lay down'! Even Mags who was in the room at the time joked that I should just stay on my back!
I had one more contracted follow-up appointment with Dr. Bassi at 3 months post procedures. By this point I had totally given up on any hope of something that resembled good, professional service.
In summary:
I am sure that both Dr. Bassi and Mags are nice people and reading other reviews on this site they would agree with that.
