ORIGINAL POST
40 Yo, Hoping to Firm my Backside with Sculpsure
WORTH IT
Just had consultation done and was very pleased with how friendly and professional Gena is. She explained what will happen at our first session and was very detailed. I felt very comfortable and look forward to going in for the first session! The office and consult space is super clean.
I received this complimentary treatment through the RealFriends program.
UPDATED FROM julstummy
Day of treatment
First session complete....ouch
So this afternoon I completed my first SculpSure treatment. I couldn’t find a lot of info for treatment of the area I’m having done so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have to laugh thinking I would just lay there and read a book. We started off with taking before pics and then I laid down on my side to have the right side done first. Three panels were attached and it was tricky getting all the contacts to stay in place. It was several minutes of adjusting before the machine could start. The first four minutes is a warm up and it starts off feeling like a blast of cold air. It then gradually starts to feel warm and for me (can differ for everyone) there was a zappy, tingly, crampy sensation that eventually became too much for me. The goal was to reach 1.4 but sadly I was barely tolerating .9 - so much for me thinking I tolerate pain well. Gena was wonderful and got me cold compresses for the area that hurt the worst and even fanned me. I honestly thought I was going to have to stop treatment but then I remembered how in childbirth relaxing through contractions made them less painful. Same principle worked here. At around the 10 minute mark one of the sensors lost contact and another few minutes were spent trying to get all the contacts to engage and for the rest of the time it never felt uncomfortable again and I only felt coolness. I even asked if it was working because there was no discomfort. Gena said I was actually at 1.1 which was quite surprising.
When the 25 minutes was up and she unattached the contacts and my skin felt very cool like an ice pack had just been on it. She gave me a little break to go to the restroom and while it felt a little tingly nothing hurt and I felt confident about going back for the left side. She placed the contacts in a slightly different spot for my left side and had my legs straightened out more which kept the contacts in place for the entire 25 minutes this time. I knew what to expect and when I started to feel the nerve like pain and cramping I just forced myself to relax and was able to tolerate it the entire time with no cold compresses needed. I will say it is not a pleasant feeling just when you think you can’t take it anymore there is a cold blast and you are able to recover before the next heat up begins. Around 10 minutes in I think our bodies adjust to it and it is not quite as painful. But for me, the left side still wasn’t comfortable or pleasant like the remaining 15 minutes were on the right side.
With all that said when I touched my skin on the left side after she took the machine off it didn’t feel quite as cold as the right and I almost immediately felt a deep soreness and tenderness. Driving home I was surprised how uncomfortable I was and how strong the discomfort was but only on my left side. Right side the skin feels like a slight sunburn but there is no tenderness or soreness.
I was very happy that Gena called me two hours after I had left the office to check on me so I could explain how I was concerned that one side hurts so much and the other does not at all. She told me it was completely normal and assured me that both sides did have the same treatment.
She said that women that get it on their lower abdomen will actually feel like they did thousands of crunches so the intense soreness makes a little bit more sense for me now I just wish it wasn’t so uncomfortable. Or maybe if I had the same amount of discomfort on both sides it wouldn’t bother me as much??? Not sure. I think I’m just paranoid that I didn’t get as strong of a treatment on the right side.
She said I could do ice packs which I have been doing and I took two extra strength Tylenol but it barely took the edge off. I will probably take a couple of Advil before bed. I can already feel the difference with swelling on my left side where I don’t really feel it on my right. Part of me wishes I had put the procedure off as I have family coming in town tomorrow but maybe they will distract me from the discomfort. :) if anything we can have a big laugh if my butt looks twice as big this week from swelling ;) I am to massage the areas twice a day for 5 to 10 minutes and drink tons of water. I will update again tomorrow I am really hoping it doesn’t feel quite so tender on my left side! She did warn me that the tenderness can last up to two weeks :/
I go back again in two weeks for a skin tightening treatment and then I’m supposed to have my second session in five weeks. Right now I am just looking forward for this pain to go away on my left side.

Want to add that six hours post treatment the throbbing burning on my left side became considerably less painful. No need for Advil after all. Extremely tolerable sensation now, very relieved! It feels tender but not painful like earlier.

Good to hear!! They told me no ibuprofen or any kind of anti inflammatory for a week after treatment

She did say they really preferred for me to stick with Tylenol, I’m just so glad I didn’t need anything at all that night. :) I am glad to know if it happens next time (after pain) it will go away.

Thanks for your very detailed update. It sounds like your experience was pretty intense - at least the first part. I wasn’t able to make it beyond 1.10 either; however I’ve read 1.10 is the level they used in the SculpSure clinical trials so it should be just fine. When I had my arms done the sensors also lost contact a couple times. I believe that’s a common issue with going “off label” since the applicators were designed for different areas. I was told one of the safeguards with the laser is if the sensor does not have proper contact with the skin it shuts off. Glad to read in your 6 hr update that the throbbing is less painful. Now it’s just a wait and let the process happen. I look forward to hearing more… :-)

I definitely think the sensors on the right side shut off for several minutes as it became tricky to get them to stay put. So for sure my right side didn’t get the exact same time as my left but at the time I welcomed the break because it was so uncomfortable. I am actually glad I get to go again because I want to see if I have the same after pain on the right side if I get the full session. It would just solidify in my head that that’s the reason I have such a difference in feeling with my left side now.

Thanks so much for being so thorough! I'm so nervous going into my session on Thursday! I hope your next sessions are less painful!

July 17, 2018
I will be thinking of you on Thursday! I think for the next sessions it won’t be as bad mostly because I will know exactly what to expect and I’ll know that if I have pain after it is temporary. It is kind of a mind game though with having one side have such a reaction & the other side have none. it will be interesting to see at six weeks out if there’s any difference at that point. I can’t help but wonder with the right side having the sensors lose contact for a few minutes and then to only feel a cold sensation the rest of the time , that I just didn’t get quite the same treatment.. I do know that the next session she knows how to put them on me so the sensors do not lose contact at all since she did it perfectly for the left side. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

Thanks for the update hun. I finally did mine a few minutes ago. Sorry you had so much discomfort. Now I wonder if mine did anything, lol. I am sore today but only on the Left side. That’s so weird how you get the same thing on both sides (actually more on my R) and only 1 side is sore
Keep us posted on how things continue
And what is this skin tightening you speak of? How does it work? Is it costly? I really need some skin tightening on my thighs. Where are you getting tightening done? Sorry for all the ?? Just really curious
Thanks again for the update hun

Hi!! That’s interesting having similar issue of one side being sore. My right side feels like nothing whereas my left is mildly tender if I push or lay on that side.So I am going to Alon aesthetics in San Antonio and they include a treatment of Exilis with Sculpsure. I have barely researched it but Gena told me it doesn’t hurt. :) I assume they will treat the same area that received sculpsure. The idea is that the skin will loosen with the removal of fat so we try and tighten the skin to avoid sagging. I go on the 31st.

Oh wow, I’m curious to see how it works!!! Keep me posted and take before and afters for that too if you can.

Hi. Thanks for the beautifully detailed review. I had my Sculptsure yesterday and was reading your review and thinking the same.... I could relax and talk through the session with out any discomfort. But, boy I was wrong. I also tried the deep breathing technique during the intense heat. It was a little less painful, but the blast of cool air was like AHHHHH!
I’m now prepared, like you, for the next session, and what to expect. No magazine reading. Lol
Good luck and happy healing. Xoxo

Hi! I swear I watched a video about SculpSure that showed a woman just looking at her phone while she relaxed during treatment! I wasn't fully prepared at all - but yes thank goodness for the cool blasts, those are the best! I am really hoping I don't have the 5-6 hours of throbbing pain afterwards next time. That really messed with my head thinking maybe something was wrong. I haven't found any other reviews with anyone in pain afterwards. My symptoms now are totally in line with what I read, just mild tenderness and soreness.
UPDATED FROM julstummy
1 day post
Zero pain for my birthday morning!
I can’t tell you how relieved I was last night to have the pain become mild and now this morning be completely gone! Not only do I have family coming but it’s my birthday and yesterday I was thinking I may be in pain with ice packs all day. :) Not the case! There’s just a mild tenderness if I push on the area. This I expected. There’s a little pocket of swelling on my left side, last night and a little this morning I can see a small area that looks like a collection of fat. I believe another review described it as a whelp which is a great description. Right side (which never had post treatment pain) doesn’t really show swelling or the whelp area. I definitely “feel” like the left side got treated and I am very curious what the results will show!
In 5 weeks I will get second treatment done and we can discuss any different placement of the sensors. My last bit of advice would be because of everyone having different reactions I wouldn’t schedule this procedure right before a special event or vacation, schedule at least a few weeks before.

Happy Birthday! What a relief for you to have minimal pain on your birthday weekend celebration. Hopefully your whelps will dissipate today and you get to enjoy your day.
It’s so true what you mentioned about how everyone reacts differently to any procedure. My flanks are fine, no tenderness, no whelps and no discomfort. But, I did experience such discomfort during the procedure. The intense heat felt like a hot iron on my sides. It was so bad that I got nauseous. That was really the only downside of it all. Not too bad!? I’m drinking water and planning on walking today for a bit.
Good luck my Realself Friend. Hugs!

July 19, 2018
Thank you! I have found walking to be helpful and now I am finally pushing myself to drink the amount of water I should drink every day anyways! :) So glad you have no discomfort!

Can I ask you if you gave your technician a tip? I’m not sure how much to give, on my next session?

July 20, 2018
Oh I didn't! I feel bad I didn't even think of that....that's a good question though.

July 20, 2018
Unfortunately I'm the worst at knowing what tip is appropriate and usually have to ask whoever is near me if I can. I always love when the suggested tip amount is printed on receipts! I would think $20 would be a generous tip. :)

July 21, 2018
I didn’t either. Didn’t think this was something you tip for. But then again I go to an imaging center not a spa for my procedure
