In the past few months I have started to develop significant breathing issues. It started where I had a hard time getting enough oxygen while exercising. I just felt like I couldn't possibly breathe in enough air through my nose, and was sure it wan't because I just wasn't in shape. Then it started to get difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. I noticed finally it was because I was having to put in a significant amount of effort to breathe. Now it is to the point where I have to breathe through my mouth for exercise and sleeping. I often wake up with bad headaches and get little sleep. I finally saw and ENT about a month ago and he told me I had a deviated septum. He said it was blocking 75% of my airway. I actually never really noticed how crooked my nose was until he told me this and I went back and looked at pictures. I always knew I had a big nose with a big bump but somehow I overlooked the crooked part. He recommended surgery to have this fixed and added that if I wanted my nose actually straightened that I should see someone who also had cosmetic experience. I've done a lot of research into finding someone and what it would all consist of. I have always felt like my nose didn't fit me and am looking forward to breathing normally again and also having a more subtle nose.
Also recently I noticed that my headaches and pressure in my face is from my nose. I used to think it was just wearing glasses and having those sitting on my nose all day did that. But I had Lasik recently and no longer wear glasses. I still get that bad pressure there and pain in that area.
My consultation is next Thursday and I am hoping to get surgery done as soon as possible. They said they are booking out into June/July so hopefully I can get a good date that works for me.

I had my consultation yesterday. They took pictures and asked me what were my issues with my nose, both functionally and cosmetically. He altered some of the pictures they had taken so I could get an idea of what it would end up looking like and I liked that he let me make suggestions. Anytime I said something like I think it looks too curved or too small or whatever it was, he would say something like you know I think I agree with you. So it was great to feel like it was a collaboration.
I was really nervous, like feeling sick to my stomach, which is normal for me when I get anxious. But after talking to Dr. Ward for awhile and then going over different things about my nose that bothered me, and hearing the gratification that my nose does have actual issues really helped me not be so nervous.
Up until my consultation I was so stressed about my nose. My breathing issues made everything uncomfortable, I couldn't sleep well, I had headaches, and just the unknown of knowing if/when I would ever be able to get it fixed was just stressing me out. And now that I have a date set to get it fixed, I feel so much better. Of course my nose is still awful and causing me issues, those have not gone away. But the knowing that I will be getting it fixed has kind of put me at ease. I am happy about it and look forward to it. I was not expecting to be able to get a date so soon, I was expecting mid-late summer so that was a relief.
Now I just have to plan out all the logistics, especially since I live about 5 hours away. Right now I am just happy and looking forward to the surgery day!

Thank you! I am so excited! The travel is an inconvenience but I think it is worth it. And 5 hours away isn't too bad. My surgery is scheduled for May 12!

Good luck. I had this surgery about 18 months ago now and I have felt an improvement. For me, it hasn't completely cured my symptoms but ENT were honest with that up front. By the sounds of it it's definitely
gonna relieve your symptoms so glad you've gone for it. Keep us updated and good luck

Thank you! I am so glad it helped you! Yeah I really am just hoping to be able to breathe more naturally. Having to try to breathe is frustrating and makes everything difficult. And as a bonus I will hopefully like the overall look of my nose too!

Surgery in About 2 Weeks - Nervous/Excited
skinglowingApril 26, 2017
Recently it seems like I have seen more reviews of people on here that have a negative experiences with rhinoplasty. I am not only getting cosmetic changes done but also functional changes. I am only nervous about the cosmetic. It seems like most people see that part as a gamble. Even if you have a good surgeon, who appears to be on the same page as you, and you have some sort of imaging to show that. Somewhere along the way, people end up with a result they do not like.
There are so many factors in surgery I cannot tell what is going wrong for people. Maybe what they wanted doesn't look how they thought it would, or maybe the surgeon actually did take out too much, etc... Of course I want to change the look of my nose, but all of these different things make me nervous. I hope in the end it suits my face better as well as works better.
I would like to hear your thoughts on all of this. I am on one side so excited to get it fixed, and on the other hand all these horror stories also make me nervous.

I think it's a roller coaster recovery & you are looking so hard at your nose you can get obsessed with every little thing not perfect about it.But if your like me I'm just great full it's better than before & love it.Your Doctor sounds good so don't stress & good luck :)

I am 11 days away from surgery and I feel exactly the same. The cosmetic part is all I've been concerned about because one, that's the only noticeable change, and two, all of the horror stories aboiut expectations and actual results. While it will be awesome to breath out of both sides, no one will ever see that.

Yours is really near mine! It's funny because I really don't like how my nose looks from the side and front. And I want it to be different enough to where I like it, I just feel like that requires quite a big change. Like you want it to be noticeably different, but have no one realize it. Haha it is such a contradiction. I suppose I am fine if people I know notice a difference, I just do not want people I do not know to be able to tell. It would be great if people just think for some reason I have gotten better looking!
Like most people I hope it does not end up-turned at the tip and not too much of a slope in the bridge.

I am just over two weeks out from rhino/septo surgery. I also had polyps removed, turbinate reduction, and nasal valve repair. My surgery was 4 hours long and I was terrified going in.
I am a total success story. The recovery was not bad at all with minimal pain. I suffer from migraines and asthma too, so I really was expecting to be disabled post surgery. I have barely had a headache at all and my asthma is already improved!
I do believe my success did come from picking the right surgeon. Mine was just amazing.
My cast, stitches, and splints were removed a week after surgery. Slightly uncomfortable, but like anything I read. I did not have the old fashioned packing that many people in the past found painful during removal.
Even with the swelling that comes with recovery, my nose is perfectly straight for the first time ever. I immediately could breathe out both sides of my nose, taste, and smell!! This was only after one week.
I am now at the stage where I have little discharge. My energy level is just like pre-surgery and actually, I feel pretty healthy now.
Good luck. If your experience is anything like mine, you will actually be shocked that the operation and recovery is nothing like the scary stories you read online.

Oh wow I am so glad it went really well for you and that you are happy with it so far! Hopefully it will be the same for me!

I so too.
The one thing I did do was stay on top of doing those saline rinses they recommend after surgery. They will have you doing it from day one on. Don't be afraid to do them. They really keep the crusts from building up inside, hence some of the discomfort. I also recommend drinking tons of water, before and after surgery. Staying hydrated really helps. Good luck. If you have any specific questions, let me know if I can help.

How often do you have to go back into his office? And do you use tape on your nose? I know some doctors have patients do that after they take the cast off.
